Reminder that after tariffs were announced in Q4 2018:

- Stock market dropped 15% in the final few months of the year; first negative year since 2011

- GDP growth slowed to 2% in 2019 and 1.8% in Q4 2019 YOY

- Tariffs did not seem to cause long-term inflation as customers changed their spending habits and only 12% of imported goods were tariffed

What exactly is this reminder? Also the exact same time the fed started QT from Obama era Great Recession policies.

Fed raised rates in 4q18.

Market then rebounded in Jan Feb of 2019.

People forget they raised rates 7 times during that time frame.

I am one of those who tends to believe that China learned from the Opium Wars. Pretty much all of fentanyl precursors is state subsidized and introduced. Fentanyl is a strategic weapon to the Chinese and to date, incredibly effective. I don't dismiss that line of thinking out of hand, because to be absolutely honest, I would do the same thing in their shoes.

I don't think tariffs are the answer to everything, but in this case, it is AN answer. In an area where there simply hasn't been one previously, period. Let's just see how it plays out first in effectiveness before we start casting stones everywhere.

ETA:

Here is the site for the bipartisan House investigation into the CCP's part of the fentanyl epidemic. Really interesting stuff in there.

https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/members

Here is the summary of the investigation:

https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/4.16%20The%20CCP's%20Role%20in%20the%20Fentanyl%20Crisis.pdf

For my TLDR version: China is explicitly and knowingly facilitating, aiding, and encouraging the manufacturing and sale of fentanyl to foreign countries but especially America in order to sow chaos and weaken us as a nation. They also lie about it and protect those who get caught in the act. We, as in America, needs to address this aggressively at every approach and right the hell now. This investigation concluded in April of this year.
THEY ARE COMPLETELY OPEN ABOUT HOW THEY ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO DESTROY AMERICA . THIS BOOK WRITTEN BY A PLA OFFICE IS A HOW TO GO TO DESTROY AMERICA . YES IT TALKS ABOUT FLOODING AMERICA WITH DRUGS TO DESTROY THE SOCIAL FABRIC. WALLSTREET AND IDIOT LEFTIST IN GOVT. PLUS NIXON LOOKED THE OTHER FOR MONEY AND POWER!!!
all caps because this subject pisses me off like you cant believe !!!
They should count their lucky stars every night before they go to bed. I would literally put hundreds/thousands up against a wall for the irreversible damage they have done to America if I was King of the World !!!

It's about time. We have leverage and have been way too chicken **** to use it. I will gladly pay more for goods if we get these kind of results. At least I know my money would be actually benefitting the country.

Here's to those of us who look at prices for goods going even higher than they have over the past four years and go, "Damn, it sure feels good to not feel having even less money in our savings and wallets. Suck it Lol poors"

The products won't even make it to shelf because the market will adjust and source from non-tarriff impacted similar goods.
the net effect is that the consumer pays more. simple example:

heb buys avocados for a $1 from mexico and sells them for $1.50. now there's a 25% tariff so those $1 avocados now cost $1.25, so they buy avocados from peru instead for $1.10 and sell them for $1.60.

the consumer now pays 10 cents more for avocados. this is why tariffs are inflationary.
Oh no, ten cents? Might as well let Mexico keep treating our southern border like the piss-ditch at burning man then

Show me one post where I even remotely supported Kamala. I'll wait.

As for my post, I was only expanding on what was posted that I replied to. I mean, if people are willing to pay more, for whatever reason, why not take it to it's fullest.

And, yes, I'll give Trump another chance. I give them all a chance, even the ones I am on the opposite side of.

If Trump can get prices to go down on everything we all buy, including housing, more power to him. I'll be the first to go, "Good Trump." If the tarrifs increase prices on anything we buy, and people complain about it, well, not, "Good Trump."

Time will tell.

Prices are already high, this making things worse isn't a thing you just poopoo away with a haughty guffaw because it's our guy doing the economy ****ing. He had solid border results without economic idiocy before just by following and enforcing the laws. Do THAT again and quit taxing us more via idiotic tariffs.

Pardon my ignorance regarding inflation. I have never taken an economics class in my life, so straighten me out here if I am off base.

My understanding is that inflation is the oversupply of currency, or conversely the under supply of products by definition. Like the old saying, "Too much money chasing too few products."

Therefore, it seems that saying tariffs are inflationary is incorrect as it affects neither the supply of money nor the supply of products, merely the price. Granted higher prices may be the result of tariffs which may have similar effect to inflation but would not be inflation by definition.

Additionally, any prices that rise as a result of tariffs could over time be combatted with competitive market forces. Inflation would not be as easy to fight with competitive market forces because the effects of inflation affect all sides of the equation.

And of course, a tariff could end as easily as it was created. Not so much with inflation.

The best way to keep evil men from wielding great power is to not create great power in the first place.
