How to "fix" social security:

Everybody must pay into social security until you are 40. This helps the system stay afloat for everybody has already paid into the system.

At 40, you can opt out. You will never see the money you paid into the system. It's gone. However, for the remaining 20 plus years you work, you no longer have to pay into the system.

Easy.

F that.

I am against removing SS.

Here's why.
In the US, we have a lot of stupid and incompetent people who cannot manage their money. They spend whatever they make without thinking about the future. No saving. Now this is no one else's problem except that they soon go on welfare or get into crime when they are desperate.

SS is for when you are old and cannot earn. You should not be on the streets at this time. So the Govt or some agency has to take away money when you are able and give it back when you are not able.

If Americans were responsible then this would not be needed but they aren't. Even on TA, I am sure 90%+ are under debt. Irresponsible financial habits. Our own country is under debt.

It is a new reality that one cannot face retirement with just what you made from your salary. Even if you were careful and saved. You need investments. If not, finito.

So In an ideal situation, yes. Realistically, no.

We bail these people out anyway.

Either end SS, or end the FED and ban government bailouts for eternity.

FDR started SS.

Unfortunately I wasn't around to vote then.

What they should do-

1) for everyone that has paid in for 35 years: keep your benefit through retirement.

2) if you have paid in 5-35 years you get the option for reduced benefits after retirement or a single pay out at a percentage of what you paid in. If i paid in 30 years, i can get 85% of what i paid in. If i paid in 25 years i can get 75 percent of what i paid in...and step it down like that to reflect how much time someone has to put any payout into the market. Cutting payouts like this will help keep SS afloat because the government will get to keep a percentage of what you put in. Your payout is tax free money that can be put into a Roth or traditional IRA that ignores the usual maximum limits for contributions.

3) if you paid in 5 or less you get a single check that is not taxed.

4) and noone has to pay in ever again.

Dismantle it.

I would take 50 cents on the dollar for the ability to take it out and manage it.

The worst investment in ****ing ever.

You're right, but good luck with that. Will never happen. The mere mention of it will end your political career.

Because boomers are the most self centered generation to have ever existed.

They voted for covid shutdowns that crippled their grandkids and they voted themselves these benefits that will force their grandkids to be slaves to the state.

Boomers- the generation that was given the most amd given back the least.

Worst. Generation. Ever.

It would have to be a process of eliminating it like you pointed out. Simply can't screw people over who've paid their entire lives, and just cut it off and let the government just hand out a small % to everyone.

Not me. I've assumed my entire working career that I would NEVER see a dime of SS when I reach retirement age. It's always been a Ponzi scheme that was destined for insolvency. I have literally never considered it when planning for retirement. I have always just viewed it as an added tax to support boomers. Nothing would make me happier than to see a plan put in place to wind it down over the next decade and get rid of it. Keep what you've taken, but take no more.

They certainly should end it but they'd need to pro-rate what they refund people in what they've already paid in based on age.

No one would be able to get all or even most of what they've paid since it's a Ponzi scheme but at 45 ill take a small percentage of my money back to get out of ever paying in again.

Someone who is 60 would understandably get more and someone who has only paid in for a few years gets little to nothing. Fine with me!

SS has been a topic of discussion since before Reagan, and they ended up increasing the rate from 6.7% to the eventual 7.65%. That kept it "solvent" for forty years but then the government systematically borrowed what should have been the excess to run the government. Now young people are going to pay the price, either through higher taxes, lower benefits, or both. Those over 50 will likely also end up paying the price, as all of the SS income will be subject to the federal income tax. For me, I'm going to collect beginning the day I retire - forget about waiting to normal retirement age or even up to age 70 to get more money - it's going to get worse so I think I will lose by waiting even if I live to 100.

The best way to fix it was already tried by GW Bush - allow a portion of it to go into your own account. But the idea was a loser politically because every elected official was afraid of losing the next election if they supported changes to it. I doubt any of them are suddenly going to grow a pair, so the change will occur only when it hits the fan.

Not ONLY no...but, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're not gonna phck my grandma or millions of others for that matter. In fact, the govt. needs to repay what they literally stole for all the pork crap they've approved over the last several decades. Empty all the bureaucrats bank accounts to start with. Imagine how much money you would have in a 401k if 13% of all the wages you had ever earned had gone into it.

I am early 50's and still never even think about SS when planning for retirement. If it is there at current rates great, but if it gets reduced by 50% or even 100%, I have an alternate plan. I think that is one thing that was instilled in kids born in the 70's, don't plan on SS.

A financial net must be extended to old folks in the US if demographics are to stay the same.

You eliminate social security and your average age at death will dramatically reduce. For the most part people in the US would not be able to afford a standard of living high enough to survive. Sad, but true.

google tells me that 1.5 trillion is paid out to SS every year. I wonder how much foreign aid we waste per year. i'd much rather pay our pathetic and diabetic society mouth breathers 2,100 per month than give a single dollar to American hating countries around the world.

I would imagine it would be quite the shot in the arm to the economy if everyone got a limp sum check back. I would settle for what I paid in with zero. I've paid enough but also young enough by the time I reach retirement age there won't be anything left.

SS is not going to be ended. Some reforms, maybe. SS in addition to a "retirement" program as intended has become a welfare program. Tax, tax,tax is the name of the game.

The real solution, and I've said this before, is systematic deflation. The people feeling the most pain would be the ones with the most assets and most debt. The people with nothing, or just cash.. like people depending on SS, would see their purchasing power greatly improve.

Nobody wants it to happen because they can't imagine their 401k losing half of its value, house losing half of its value, etc. It would be painful for them. You would hear panic in the streets and the loudest voices would be politicians and the wealthy elite. That's because deflation takes from them while strengthening the bottom and middle of the country. The reverse of what our system has been doing for the last 100 years.

I'm ok with ending SS as long as they never deduct another dime from my check, and a policy put in place where it can't come back. I'll throw away 20 years of SS payments if they'll actually do that

SS started long before I was ever able to vote.

I did vote for the only President who made any attempt to let people choose what to do with their SS taxes (George W. Bush).

I agree that it is not within the Federal Government's purview to force retirement savings, but the Constitution has not been a strong restrictor of Federal Government power for many decades.

Wrong. Actually she's getting what she deserves and was promised. The govt. screwed you, your kids and theirs long time ago. They stole from the pgm. and never intended to repay it because of the crooks they are. They are stealing from it as we speak...fix that FIRST and punish them for their on-going corruption. If history needs to be rewritten, this is one aspect where fingers should be pointed and names need to be named. Pretty much includes EVERY elected, swinging d**k and split t**l for the last 50+ yrs.

Eliminating SS now won't fix anything...the corruption theft will continue as usual. These people can't/won't say NO to help you, me, my kids, or yours and theirs. Their addiction is worse than drugs, sex or alcohol abuse. They are blatant thieves and should wear masks at work.
