I really hope Trump goes after CAFE standards

To me CAFE standards are one of the most egregious overreaches of the Federal Government. Some bureaucrats just dream up their desires for what they want cars to get in terms of gas mileage based on formulas disconnected from common sense so that they can pursue their Green New Deal dream. It has severely limited the types of cars that are made and the quality of engines but most of all costs. Companies are going to extreme lengths to try to get vehicles to stretch out performance on small engines with turbos and other crap that end up being far more expensive and also make the engines less reliable long term. A lot of the auto companies are ok with it because they get more repairs and people look at cars as more of a disposable item because it just gets too expensive to fix used cars.

It's also completely screwed up segments like the light duty truck market. Let car makers make cars people want and do so safely and cheaply. There should be far more options for inexpensive cars and CAFE standards are one of the main drivers why there aren't in combination with all of the other requirements put on new vehicles.

Would be a great move. Democrat administrations have constantly increased CAFE standards with no regard for practicality. Just a magic wand declaring the increase. It has done little but make cars much more expensive. And ****tier.

Agree completely.

They also need to end the DEF requirement for all diesel engines.

I'd love to see a medium duty diesel. 4.5-5 liters.

And stop putting 4-bangers in big trucks. For the love of God, ford...

They absolutely destroyed small diesel engines in the US market. I just recently sold my 2005 VW Jetta TDI MK4 with 370K miles (bought new). It was still getting 47MPG.

With all garbage they piled on, the these small TDI engines are getting low 30s MPG. When VW had the "illegal" tunes active, the same TDIs were getting 50MPG or more.

I had a 4 banger in my Nissan truck back when, it was great for the size of the truck. That was a while ago, the truck was probably a lot smaller and lighter than current small trucks.

And then Congress should follow that up with something that severely limits if not eliminates the executive's ability to change CAFE standards going forward.

Then if Congress wants them changed, pass a law.

THIS!! If you add up the cost to make that, haul it, put it is plastic jugs, and then suffer the 3 or 4 miles to the gallon loss in mileage over the life of that vehicle...... Your not gaining anything environmentally. Not to mention the cost/shipping/production of the parts that make it half &&& work. Its doing something to say you are but your really not.

The fact that the have to make vehicles bigger and less fuel efficient to increase their shadow to meet the cafe fuel efficiency standards is a great display of exactly how government works

Agreed. End the CAFE Standards.

But, also something has to be done about California that has their own standards and also drives the car market.

I believe that Trump made some headway against Cali setting their own standards during his first term. Of course Brandon undid whatever Trump did. Hopefully Trump will finish the job this time.

The newer CAFE standards have single handedly accomplished what nobody else was able to do for the last several decades...knock Toyota out of the top spot for reliability. When they were making normally aspirated V6 engines, they were indestructible but not terribly efficient. Now that they are having to try to squeeze more power out of less fuel to meet higher CAFE standards, the new engines are turning out to be less reliable than before. Hopefully Trump can roll those back and let Toyota go back to doing what they do best.

My fav thing was when manufacturers stopped putting spare tires and jacks in cars to reduce weight to meet the standards. Are you kidding me?!

The end message is that outside of some basic guardrails for safety let the market drive the demand. If anything they could standardize the type of fuel used in the US as it drives up costs immensely with each state having different mixes and standards. Just pick one. That's kind of another topic though.

Just let car manufacturers build cars people want.

This exactly. The mpg standards are bad enough but the math incentivizes bigger vehicles just to game the system.

Post-Chevron, I'm not sure the EPA has the authority under the clean air act to regulate vehicle milage.

I don't want Trump to roll back CAFE standards, I want a conservative to sue Trump so an intern can be assigned to defend (and lose) the case on the constitutionality of the standard.

GM has a turbocharged 2.7L 4 cylinder as their base gas engine now in Silverado/Sierra 1500s

It was more for the Canyon's and Colorado's that were fitted with diesels. They stopped making that engine in 2022. GM discontinued the 3.0 Durmax in September of 24. Dodge discontinued their 3.0L V6 Eco Diesel in 2022.

Problem is the previous standards have been in law long enough that all the auto manufacturers have switched over production lines. Too expensive to switch back, at least in the near term. He will have to cancel them and have that continue for years after. No one switching production lines for one term.

Can he bring back incandescent light bulbs as well? And do away with the requirement to ban R410 refrigerant. And do alway with all of these "low water, low energy" appliance requirements? Not even sure if the appliance thing was federally mandated, but I hate the low energy, low water, no agitator washing machines.

There are many compact vehicles being produced by the majors that don't comply with our Cafe standards and sold elsewhere. Several of the bigger ones still produce larger engines as well.

No reason they couldn't sell some of them here.

Seems like you could use the interstate commerce clause easily to accomplish this.

I could live with abolishing CAFE if the people who consume the most fuel (for non-work use) get first priority to be drafted in our next war against an OPEC country. It's only fair.

The only way to do it would be to prevent states from setting their own environmental standards, which is an incredibly bad idea and the antithesis of small government.
