1. It employs people (because what Texas needs is more people that deal cards and clean hotel rooms)
2. Do it for the children (because the other legalized gambling - parimutuel betting and lottery have done so well)
3. Keep the money in the state (even though out of state resort owners won't be taking the profits)

I noticed they at least changed it to "destination resorts"

Can these people get more original ideas?

The people that hold up gas station lines picking their scratch offs are the worst!

Gambling is ok. Just like alcohol. Just like tobacco. Just like weed.

People who can't handle it well aren't well suited for it and it isn't my job to police them.

Anybody want to trade the Lake Charles economy with any city in Texas? Casinos are fool's gold.

Let's compare Galveston to Newport Beach. Nothing alike nor would be comparisons to Texas cities after gambling. It'd probably do Beaumont some good with more investment and a place police can focus their activities on compared to all over

I used to be ok with it. I'm a libertarian. But then my kids grew up and are inundated with sports gambling ads, gambling for fun grooming apps, etc. Clear intent to get them addicted early and keep them addicted and on the dopamine teet.

No ****ing thanks.

I'll make a compromise. Keep gambling illegal but legalize brothels. Everybody wins.

It should be legal.

And competent adults should be able to make their own choices…

Beaumont is corrupt enough already.

I would say that in theory I'm pro legalizing gambling because I think people should be allowed to make their own decisions.

But if I had to vote I'd probably vote against as a NIMBY. It isn't going to be like Vegas. It'll be more like Shreveport. Attracts crime and is a tax on the poor who aren't smart enough to not blow their pay check immediately when they get it.

Again I think in theory it should be legal but in practice think it is a dredge on society.

I'm pro-gambling from a libertarian perspective.

But now that we've seen the peek behind the curtain, I'm not so sure. It will be promised and pitched as some sort of benefit but we all know that those funds will be where they say.

Exhibit A: The Texas Lotto.

I think that instead of blanket legalization we should map out a legalized zone or territory (a county or two) within which it's legal. Out in west Texas where you can develop a Las Vegas type of atmosphere that the state and it's residents can benefit from but that allows easy regulation, oversight, and enforcement over the things that tend to come with gambling while keeping it out of everyone's back yard.

You could probably fashion Terlingua into a helluva hot spot.

So make it further from Dallas than Bossier city and further from Houston than Lake Charles. Brilliant ****ing idea.

Gambling is literally rigged games that hijack human physiology.

Shouldn't be legal.

It was more a tongue-in-cheek response to a lot of the NIMBY folks. The only way to satisfy a lot of people will be to make it so remote and out of the way that nobody will want to go.

Then again, Vegas eventually did ok for itself despite being out in BFE, so who knows

I mean mommy government protects us from a lot of things that are highly addictive like gambling can be.

I'm lucky that I can go gamble and have a good time and not care all that much about it but a lot of people aren't so lucky.

I'm in Dallas and know a handful of folks that would be in real trouble if a casino was right down the street.

Sucks that some humans can't handle things in moderation but it seems to be a fact of human nature. If you go full libertarian and just legalize everything because the government shouldn't have a say then I think we'd all agree society ends up in a way worse place.

On this issue, I am completely ambivalent. We have casinos, we don't have casinos, I don't care. I've been across the river a few times and been to Lake Charles, but gambling isn't my thing. If I'm there, I'm going to be in the penny slots.

However, these Sands Las Vegas commercials are really pushing me toward voting against casinos in the state. This isn't a a moral issue for me, it's that these jackasses want to skirt around the bush on what they want. I guess 'casino' doesn't focus group as well as 'resort destination'.

If you aren't honest enough to tell me, mr voter, what you would like me to vote for, I'm inclined to vote against you on principle, and maybe a little spite

Some here seem to view it as a moral issue. That is a bit silly. Gambling in a casino ,for me, is small potatoes. My real gambling comes in the form of buying fertilizer for my pastures when rain is forecasted. When Mother Nature is the House, you are really up against it.

Government control of gambling is all about who gets the money generated by taking advantage of those poor folks addicted to the "get rich get' syndrome and having no love of work.

Gas station slot machines are depressing. At least with casinos you have to intentionally drive there. At least with drawings there's a time gap. At least with cock fighting you have to be in the community.

I fundamentally dislike laws that are unenforceable and/or unequally applied. I also appreciate the Biblical wisdom against it, and the wake of destruction that gambling often produces. And I also understand that online sports gambling is almost impossible to suppress, gambling between friends happens all the time, and that OK / LA casinos are an hour away from a huge portion of our population.

My general take is that I don't want to increase its prevalence & corresponding number of folks who fall into degeneracy… but I know it's already here and our laws just make it clunky.

I guess I'd be somewhat open to the idea of TX casino districts. At least the Indian casino model ostensibly uses tribal loyalty to keep the $ in the community & limits casinos to remote areas most of us have to make a unique trip to.
