I imagine Trump had told Israel they can do what they must. Israel is probably weighing whether is is better to be aggressive or patient, regarding the remaining hostages.

He made it sound like WE were going to unleash hell on them if they didn't free all the hostages by the deadline. Seemed reasonable to view his words that way, since it would align nicely with the other part of his message that the U.S. is going to take over Gaza.
If he INSTEAD just meant that he would support Israel in doing whatever they want post-deadline, I think he should've said that. Which wouldn't really be any change from what we were already doing - they already had our full support.

I recall Pres Trump clearly saying there would be hell to pay…what is missed by most is at same time he said if he were calling the shots. He also said same news conference that it ultimately was Israel's decision and he'd back what they decided. Obviously Trump is following exactly what he said he'd do.

You're 100% right. What I should've said was that we've supported whatever Israel wants to do since Trump was sworn in.
But still, why give a classic western 'high noon' deadline if all we meant was "As of noon this coming Saturday, we STILL support whatever Israel wants to do"?
I think it's a fine strategy to get them all anxious about the deadline, watch what they do, let them relax thinking it was all bluster, then hit them when they think they got away with it.
