Not gonna fault CNN here if they've got a credible source. It's absolutely their job as media to report what they can credibly source.

The issue here is the leak TO CNN. That's from somewhere within. Likely within the CIA itself, either they want the surveillance to stop as it's interfering with their illicit activity OR some Deep State stooge that thinks he's a cook on the Red October.

Does the Mexican public know they are there?
Nope.
This is the kind of thing that can cause 3rd world governments to fall and leaders to get toppled.
This embarrasses the Mexican government more than anyone else.

The other day I listened to a podcast about the Iranian hostage situation in 1979. In particular, it was about the embassy workers who escaped and were hiding in the Canadian embassy (you know, the plot of the mpvie Argo). Apparently, a Canadian journalist found out about it within 24 hours of it happening and was threatening to report about it immediately. It didn't matter that it was a situation which literally put the American lives at stake.

Most journalists are those annoying, self-righteous, arrogant know-it-alls that we all knew in school. They hide behind "freedom of the press" to publish stories seeking either self-glorification or pushing their own agenda.

More fake outrage to muddy the waters.

We have been flying drones over Mexico for a long time now. Obama, you remember him? The Emperor that didn't care about the Constitution?, did this in 2011.
