Has anyone seen this video floating around of disruptive students in class at A&M? This is crap I expect to see in today's high schools (unfortunately), not at college. It certainly didn't occur in the dark ages when i was in college. But things weren't tolerated then and the school was smaller.

I can't tell what is going on here.
Is this someone too hard trying to be clever, a protester, or something else?

Can't really tell what's happening, but if it's a student disrupting it would just be emblematic of Gen Z and our current culture.

Tell them to stop once or there will be consequences for the entire class. If it continues "pop quiz time for the entire class. This quiz will be 25% of your grade."

I'd bet the students police themselves real quickly

I have done something like this. This is the way.
Disruptive behavior shows us who in the class is not paying their own way.

I think it's a bit like a comedian handling a heckler, the prof has to maintain control of the class.

As expensive as tuition is these days, charge them with felony theft.

Then that poor GA would spend the next 3 days getting yelled at by Addison's mom about how unfair that is.

I actually had a student who was watching porn during one of my lectures. Long story short, troubled.

I had to ban laptops in my class. The other students got it fixed for the next class.

Nowadays, I would be tempted to go to a "no visible phone policy" if this was happening in one of my classes. I agree, likely looking for hits on their social media pages.

My hero is one of my cadiosurgeons' whose son (almost 17) still does not have a phone.

A cancer on learning.

Our school is a shadow of its former self. I recently brought both my HS kids back for their campus tours, etc and I hardly recognize the place-and by that I don't mean the buildings, etc.

expensive for you and me. Others, not so appreciative of an education. Like an old Sgt told me, "If you dont have to pay for it, there is something wrong with it."

I watched Episode 2 of Adolescence on Netflix last night and it portrayed the abhorrent behavior of high school students in England and I can't imagine it's too far off on how things actually are in the States. It's pretty unbelievable that this behavior has seeped into higher education.

A student once streaked a class on genetics in 1974.

This probably could have been a pretty good tip off of the culture at A&M now:

It was about 40-50 people total, and many were not students.

With 70,000 students, there are going to be some idiots.

Also, they were peaceful and did not attack or harass others, nor did they damage any property.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

My time on campus was during the Apartheid movement and a small group of students would build apartheid shacks right in that same area to bring awareness.... these must be those students' kids. It's the .001% of the student body and I'd guess that many of the group are not even students of A&M

This guy in the white shirt is being disruptive. Professor warns him and then eventually picks up the phone to call security and the student then gets up and leaves.

Sounds like just being a contrarian disruptive *******.

This is the **** that happens at a diploma mill. It's sad. Lower entry standards allow lower quality of students in.

Always going to have an idiot here and there...

Problem with the pop quiz idea is the course syllabus. It's it's not on the syllabus, and/or no provision for an on the spot change, no can do.

The biggest part of maintaining control is to sweet expectations at the start. Don't ever let a bad apple like that get the upper hand. Like a school yard bully, they'll cave. They're a only truck pony with no expectation of preparation of for confrontation.

Was listening to Ted Cruz yesterday. On Wednesdays pod he was discussing his "standard" response to someone getting in his face. He said often he can are it about to happen as someone starts working up their courage when they see him in public. That start yelling, he simply replies, "God bless you." He said the majority are taken aback and have no reply ready. He said one last snapped back,"I don't need the blessings of your so called God." "That's ok. Jesus loves you anyway." She stormed off.

A prof might have to walk up to them, just square up, and firmly tell them to knock it off or get out. The choice is theirs.

YES SIR! I remember that as well... and it seems things turned out pretty poorly for South Africa since it ended.

The real problem is when leadership/faculty don't understand this basic statement;

I think the statement is too absolutist in that a subsidy of incompetence doesn't foreclose ever ending the subsidy and then accomplishing useful things again. But, the point is valid.

Yes, because they didn't understand the situation didn't know how to oppose a bad government, and threw in with communists and anarchists to burn South Africa to the ground, rather than fix the situation.
