Sen. Dick Durbin, D- Ill., the Senate Democratic whip and the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, has announced he will not seek re-election in 2026.

Durbin, who was first elected to the Senate in 1996, made the announcement in a video message on X Wednesday.

Not really a lot to say since he is going to be replaced by another Democrat, one who is likely even more to the left then he is.

At least it costs the Democrats a very senior seat in the Senate, where seniority still has a lot of meaning and power when it comes to positions and committee assignments.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Turban Durban is getting out before the Durban recession takes hold. He should step up and take responsibility for the impending economic doom.

This one puzzles me. He's in leadership as the Whip, easily would be reelected in very blue Illinois.

There is a LOT coming down the pike that is going to link a LOT of these longtime career politicians that have all amassed fortunes on the taxpayer dollars and they are getting out before they have to face the music and possible legal repercussions, so they have stashed enough money to live life comfortably and figure if they are out of office they will avoid being targeted

I don't recall the pundit or show (safe to say it was Fox News) but the talk was on the increasing number of Dems looking at bowing out as their political party realigns and pointing to a dimmer outlook for any gains and more likely losses in the midterm.

Trump getting the economic hiccups out of the way now and delivering on his agenda with making the tax cuts permanent should bode very well for 2026.

Dems are flirting ever towards a decade of wandering into a political desert in the US. You hate to see it, but then again, you love to see it (knod to Chappelle).

It's sadly telling as to the state of our gerontocracy when one's first thought is, "Why is he stepping down? He's only 80!"
