While I think it is great that the private sector has stepped up regarding space exploration, it is sad what NASA has become. The funding has just shrunk to an inconsequential amount. USAID had the same budget as NASA. The EPA has nearly twice the budget.

It went from over 4% of government spending in the 60s to less than 0.5%.

Houston was the epicenter for space.

I've always found space exploration an incredible and worthwhile endeavor. Unfortunately, most do not.

Agreed. As a historical NASA fan whose efforts were one of the few that I was totally cool funding, I don't even know what they do anymore.

Once the space shuttle program was killed, NASA disappeared from the public conscious.
This fall will mark the 25th year of continuous human presence in space. Curious to see if the media gives NASA any coverage for that achievement.

So if I use twitter, it makes Elon evil or not evil? Interesting logic.

Hey, I'm just going off of what this place was like, and how the praise was heaped on Elon, when he bought Twitter, then went full maga, then cranked it to 11 when be was DOGE. I mean, how could a guy get that much love and appreciation and also be evil?

I never really liked Elon and never have owned his stock. I find him to be a cantankerous kind of person, highly eccentric and impulsive. It is amazing how he got to be so successful, either he got very lucky or he games the system or he is really very very good. I think it is a combination.

DOGE was a great idea but how he went about it was very disappointing. I expected a successful CEO to align with other department heads, remove people who were not needed (not everyone) in a mature manner. Instead he embarrassed everyone with his chain-saw antics and fired entire departments. Like a monkey given a handgun.

Someone who wants H1Bs to run riot in this country and is not honest about what it really is, is evil for me.

what has NASA done lately. haven't gone back to the moon in 50 years, have had multiple space shuttle blow up, can't bring astronauts home from space station.

I still point to landing on the moon as the last impressive accomplishment of our government. Seriously, name something the government did over the last 55 years that was more impressive than landing on the moon and planting our flag.

Also, when I say "impressive" I mean in a positive way. They've certainly done MANY negative things that were impressive over that time....sadly.

Good for him. He did no one any favors. He did everything for himself.

He wants to flood this country with H1B and that displays his evilness. Why? Because he is dishonest. I worked with H1Bs before and 90% of them were crap. There were a few good ones but those were the exception. We as US workers had to clean up after these losers. Instead of asking for a cleanup/review of H1B, he wants it to be expanded.

He is evil.

Almost everyone works out of self-interest. Using the system the government set up to benefit your business is not evil. And I suspect that Musk tends to get better than average H1B folks, don't you? You know I agree with you on H1B, but please don't conflate legal and commonly accepted business behavior with "evil". Throwing around pejoratives both weakens your own moral authority as well as the seriousness people will impart your arguments. IMO.

Well, there is legally okay and ethically okay. He may or may not be legally in the clear. My problem with him is he never said even once that H1B has a problem of misuse and we need to review it. Never. The system was set up to cheat Americans and to help the rich get richer and he went along with it. You cannot haul him to jail for this, but he lost my respect and I think he is a fraud like most politicians/CEOs are. He can use H1Bs but as someone who joined MAGA, I expected him to talk about review, not "go to war for H1B".

It is a simple answer to why places that didn't flood 20 or 30 years ago flood now with no difference in the amount of rain. Urban Sprawl.

As cities grow, the amount of impervious land mass increases exponentially. It isn't rocket science. More concrete and asphalt means more runoff into the same creeks, bayous and river channels that 30 years ago could handle the runoff because it was significantly less. And the more neighborhoods that replace pastures, natural forest areas and prairies - the worse the problem will get.

Right.. never one of his fanbois because I hate a-hole type personalities at this point in life, however successful. I was a Steve Jobs fanboy but have soured on him in recent years though I acknowledge his genius. No justification/excuse for treating people like crap though.

I know what you mean, many of my friends were fanbois when Tesla stock was rocketing in 2021-22 but all are quiet now. Some are Dem Libs so that is another factor.

That said I wish he was successful at DOGE. I was shocked the way he went about doing it. He isn't CEO of anything in Govt, so his a-holic ways won't work and he just pissed off all the cabinet members. Not a way to get sheet done. Even Trump is calmer this time.

OK, I will agree with you that he is an opportunist, rather than an evil person. He may be a nice chap to have a beer with, seems that way. But he doesn't care about anyone but himself.

About H1B, all I am asking is that the abuse be stopped. H1B by itself is a good idea. It is abused so much that it is bad for Americans (except super elite).

Not questioning your report but I think a lot of these are in the 'earth science' related areas, where it's all climate change, etc. Some of those projects you referenced such as urban air transport etc. are also electric/alternate-green powered stuff which is a complete waste of money/time.

Congress is unfortunately insisting we keep marching forward with SLS thru launch 5 I think, which is going to cost something like $3 billion each for the next few launches when it's all said and done, thru 2029. That program is an absolute joke and should offend Americans. NASA's own folks under Biden even admitted it was a ludicrously unaffordable scheme.

If Trump was allowed to actually kill that and spend the money on exploration elsewhere we might get some good science out of it.

That's true for a lot of the areas being discussed , but where I live really hasn't changed that much. Mostly national Forest with some pastureland . There was 24 " of rain over 4 days specifically on one particular watershed . There is one newer neighborhood with
Multiacre lots several miles upstream that the long time locals blame for the issue due to sedimentation making the upper end of the lake shallower and thus more subject to a fast rise. I think they are partially right but there is only a certain amount of rainfall that can be handled in any particular situation and I think that unique situation probably exceeded what the watershed could handle , new neighborhood or not .

The mind boggles at the ignorance shown daily.

I wish we could flag posts for not actually saying anything. It's a regular thing that we get arrogance like this from a resident liberal with a drive by post suggesting they know something the rest of us don't. Post something useful or don't post.

It's a known fact Obama tasked NASA with making the Muslim world feel good about their contributions to math. Somebody had to do that which means it's a valid question in this context.

Yeah, I don't see you quoting any "bye felicia" responses. You're a hypocrite and simply want an echo chamber. I'm not writing a paragraph for every response on here simply because I'm of the minority opinion. Go troll someone else.

Three goals cited by then-admin Charles Bolden, in an interview:

- Re-inspire children to want to get into science and math
- Expand international relationships
- Reach out to the Muslim world to acknowledge their past contributions to science

If you lose your mind over this, it's ignorance. They clarified their statements since a certain segment of the population doesn't understand soft diplomacy. That's my post. Enjoy the dopamine.

I've seen early retirement programs where very good people leave because they get a fat check AND can easily find another job. People who stay back don't leave, because they wouldn't find a job someplace else.

Did an H1B bang your wife or something???

You've got a serious hate for them...

Please stay on the topic without getting personal. You don't want someone reporting you (I won't, I will just ignore you). If you don't like this topic, there are many others.

Well, the topic has nothing to do with H1Bs, so...could we get back to NASA, then?

Good. NASA is a bloated monstrosity that needs to be purged.

When the joke of $10,000 hammers was being made back in the 80s, yeah, it was definitely a place, like all places that government money goes to, for the grift to be strong.

Having worked in the defense industry for 30 years starting in the 80s, that anecdote was completely misplaced.

Back then, COTS was verboten to the government. So, if Company A needed 2 hammers for a project, they often couldn't just go buy them at the store - they had to MAKE them...or buy them from select vendors that made things to order.

This meant that instead of getting a hammer made on some tooling that was built years ago to make the hammers, the tooling had to basically be made for the order. Company A was having to pay for 2 hammers AND the tooling to MAKE 2 hammers. That tends to increase their cost, which they, in turn, passed on to the government. But it was the government's REQUIREMENT that drove the cost.

And don't get me started on Scope Creep. I heard a great joke about it early in my career...

Q: What is an elephant?

A: A mouse, built to government specifications.

LOL OP. The ones leaving are likely the most ineffective of the lot. They're leaving because they're getting a fat check and don't have to work any more. Should have been fired/laid off years ago. But you be you.

We have no way of knowing.

I've seen early retirement programs where very good people leave because they get a fat check AND can easily find another job. People who stay back don't leave, because they wouldn't find a job someplace else.

Maybe some of these folks join SpaceX and BlueOrigin. Win-win.

LOL. Keep telling yourself that chief. Liberals have to lie to themselves to make their brain align with their mouth.

I'm telling you what I've seen in industry. Good people leave before the bad ones more often than not. NASA is more government so no idea if that translates or not.

You seem upset. "Applied to Leave" means with a fat paycheck monthly for eternity. The jobs are going to independent contractors who are doing it faster and better and cheaper, with American talent. They can get those jobs unless they are used to being deadwood.

What will actually happen is they will give contracts to American companies for show. Those American companies will outsource to WITCH companies in India. Gullible Americans appeased. Everyone makes money. Rocket falls out of the sky in 10 years and none the wiser.

PS: WITCH = Wipro, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant, and HCLTech. All Indian outsourcing companies.

Can cut down on that number if you make sure to hire non Indians to operate the fuel pump switches.

Can't say for all centers, but the one I do have some insight into (a manned spaceflight center), this is not entirely true. They are losing some really topflight folks in the technical world.

Agreed. The ineffective lot has no where to go. In situations like this, it's the most talented, knowledgeable, and marketable that will leave.

Bye. SpaceX can handle it.

Also, how many of those leaving are working on DEI nonsense and understanding Islam? Obama changed the mission of NASA. Did that ever get undone?

We absolutely understand it but soft diplomacy that acknowledges a certain's culture's contributions to science several hundred years ago should never be a top 3 goal of an organization that is built to explore and capitalize our solar system. If that is one of your goals, which is not even measurable, while you are running one of the most scientifically advanced organization on the planet then you've already failed at your job.

How do you not understand this? [/rhetorical question]

See, that was a good post. And the "bye Felicia" comment was flagged by me (though not for being useless because that's not an option) but it's another great example of people posting to say nothing. The only difference IMO is your post was attacking me (I don't mean that with the hostility it comes with) whereas "bye Felicia" isn't attacking another poster.

As to the bullet points you noted:

The first one had a ton of merit. This country is increasingly weak in STEM in part because the education system does a poor job of helping kids become interested in those areas.

The second bullet point was effectively them trying to equate the rest of the world with the U.S. my biggest beef with Obama, and now seemingly most of the left, is his discomfort with the idea that America is exceptional. When they're unwilling to say we're different it's tantamount to saying we're all the same and the results simply don't support that. This country is exceptional and it's ok to believe in that fact. I'm extremely results oriented and the U.S. is undeniably the greatest nation in history but he was unwilling to say that.

The third is just nonsense. It's been a couple of millennia since that part of the world contributed anything beyond violence and chaos to the world. Let's just be honest. "Get your **** together and join the modern world" would have been a better message but he couldn't bring himself to say that either.

Good recovery. I appreciate that.
