There is no way that AE didn't plan for some leftist outrage over these ads. I think they were probably shocked just how much outrage and free publicity there was. I'd never heard of SS until the kerfuffle over this ad. Another massive backfire by the left.
Same. I watch plenty of movies and TV shows and had never seen anything she is in, but she is now one of my favorite actresses lol.
The ad has to be racist/Nazi. She has blonde hair, blue eyes and they used the word genes...her initials literally spell SS!
I actually have to disagree with OP in the statement that AE intended to suggest pseudo racism or Nazism. I thinking they did purposely use a hot white girl that would appeal to every male with his unit intact and used the word gene and jeans tongue in cheek about how freakin' hot she is because of her genes/jeans. Just a play on words without any racist intent. Other than that, intended or not, what the OP stated happened and was a huge success.

You guys do realize that she gained her popularity from a show about lesbians? Just because she participated in an American Eagle ad doesn't mean that she's a conservative. Also, being 50+ and fantasizing about a 27 year old, especially on a public forum, is weird.

I honestly have no clue if this will help or hinder her Hollywood career. Esp since it was reveleaed that she was a registered Republican (if that's true).

uh, she literally is one of the hottest females in Hollywood right now and just dropped a new Baskin Robbins commercial
you think she is hurting her career with
LITERALLY EVERYONE WANTING HER IN AN AD CAMPAIGN RIGHT NOW?!??

I realize the decision makers in Hollywood are stupid enough to blackball her. At the same time, there a certain roles that would practically guarantee success if she were cast in one right now. It amazes me how business executives sometimes ignore the easy money.El Gallo Blanco said:LMCane said:El Gallo Blanco said:

Goodness, I am talking about her ACTING career. Which is where most actresses MAKE MOST OF THEIR MONEY...although they can make substantial $$$ in ads and endorsements. I am not making any sort of statement, just genuinely curious to see how it shakes out.
Hypothetically, if it blackballed her in Hollywood to a significant extent, one day the ads are going to die down. I hope this doesn't happen but you cannot tell me there is zero chance this disrupts her acting career. Settle down Barnes.
I disagree 100%. AE knew exactly what they were doing.Old McDonald said:
doubtful this was all intentional from AE. it's was just a play on words between jeans and genes because she's hot, not because of nazi dog whistling or anything like that.
but online culture war discourse loves to flood a space with backlash to backlash to backlash ad infinitum.

American Eagle has taken over the Las Vegas sphere and put Sydney Sweeney in their jeans on it. I love the balls on this company. Makes me proud to have made $4.50 an hour to work there in 1997. pic.twitter.com/bn4qtydi4Q

This is reading waaaaay more into this ad than was put into it. It was just a jeans ad with a hot girl.
I don't think anyone would have even noticed if not for the left's collective freak out. They are now in their third week of melt down over a freaking blue jeans ad.
This whole thing has been a massive Streisand effect. If not for the left's reaction no one would have even noticed.

What I am saying is:
1) if I was about to launch this ad, would I have anticipated backlash from the left? Absolutely. No one that has been paying attention to responses to commercials is surprised by this freak out. At least I am not.
2) If you are AE and you anticipate the backlash, what do you do? Start with a black girl and talk about good jeans / genes to tone down the backlash? Or, maybe, lean into the backlash by using a white girl with blue eyes, and talk about jeans being blue.
If you think this Streisand effect wasn't planned, or at least hoped for, then you have a pretty low opinion of the intelligence of the world's best marketing people.
I'm willing to give credit where it is due. The ad was brilliant.
I do hope they follow up with a beautiful black or latino woman in something like the jeans below saying "my jeans are brown".
Would be a fun and funny follow up, and keep the pub rolling.

While I agree....I think they did know or anticipate. They SHOULD have had something ready. Let it go viral for a day. Say nothing and then roll out the other versions saying the exact same thing with every other race on the planet but different colors, black, brown, green, etc. If they had them in the can and released them right away those people would have looked dumber than they do.
Now if they do that it seems reactionary. And I'm not saying they have to do that. I'm just saying they could have and perhaps should have.
