In lieu of those letters, which we all know will never come, I offer a message received from our pastor this morning;
"To Members & Friends of Christ Church,
"As I wake up this morning to what has been for the last 24 years one of the darkest days in the history of our country, my heart is unbelievably heavy with grief and sadness over the assassination of Charlie Kirk that took place yesterday.
"He was a strong Christian, a loving husband and father, and a strong advocate for free speech. His tragic murder has profoundly revealed the cultural malaise that blankets our country today, wherein evangelical Christians who express a boldness in their faith are criticized, condemned, and even cancelled. I was truly appalled by the way some in the mainstream media characterized the heinous act of evil that was committed on the campus of Utah Valley University.
"I said this past Sunday that we must be bold in our witness. Charlie Kirk exemplified the kind of boldness that is called for from Christians today. He gave people the opportunity to share their opinions. He listened carefully to each person. He then responded with a beautiful blend of boldness and compassion.
"May we not sit idly by in the coming days and weeks. Instead, it is my prayer that we will represent to our children, our families, and our friends our Savior, Jesus, who built His Church on a Rock, and declared that the Gates of Hell will never prevail against it.
"But what exactly does that mean?
"It means that we will not shy away from conversations with unbelievers or with people who are opposed to Christianity because we worry that we might somehow offend them by our beliefs and convictions. It means that we will speak the truth, but we will speak the truth in love. It means that as followers of Jesus, we will recognize sin as sin while remembering that all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. It means that we will love as Jesus loved, remembering how He told the adulterous woman that He didn't condemn her while also charging her to "go and sin no more." It means that we will boldly stand on the truth of God's word while boldly loving even those who seem impossible to love.
"I have watched Charlie Kirk model that kind of Christian witness, and I pray that you and I will extend his legacy through the ways we walk as followers of Jesus. The world we live in today desperately needs you and me to live like that.
"Will you? Will we?
"God bless you.
"Peace,
Jerry"
