Using new DNA techniques linked to Robert Eugene Brashers, a serial killer who committed suicide in 1999.

They just released one a few weeks ago on HBO and I watched it and was thinking ...wow they'll never solve this.

Happy that they did

Thank God. That happened four years after my wife and I got married. We remember that was a dark and tragic time here in Austin.

1991. The Hubs remembers that well. Not because he rolled up onto the scene as he was at another station back then but he knew several colleagues in AFD who were first responders to that scene. A few just up and retired they were so traumatized. Messed all of them up.

Now these were career guys who had rolled up on the worst crispy critters, floaters, gruesome car accidents where they had to go look for missing body parts.

But THAT SCENE? Teenage girls? In North Austin which was low crime area back then? Awful. Just awful.

Dark and tragic? That's the current situation with progressives in charge.

I started the HBO special, have not finished it, but I remember when this happened in real time. I was living in Houston, but I definitely remember it. So senseless.

It's called "The Yogurt Shop Murders". They didn't spend a lot of time on the title.

I think about these killings every time I drive through that part of town. So glad to hear this news. After watching the Idaho stuff, the Luigi guy and the Charlie Kirk murder, it seems that it is getting more difficult to get away with murder and most everything with dna is solvable……..now go solve Jonbenet.

Just reading about the case, and it seems there is a lot there. They found some teenagers at the time that were initially dismissed as suspects, but tried and convicted years later. Seems the police had obtained questionable confessions, and they were later released. Even got Kenneth McDuff involved in it.

I was attending school at the Evil Empire at the time. Students weren't concerned that we were in danger, but it was perplexing how everything APD checked into seemed to be a dead end. People really wanted resolution.

Around the same time, Kenneth McDuff had been killing people, and a girl went missing from a car wash in town. It was sort of life in the big city, but this case was just a mystery.

In a lot of ways it was the beginning of the end of the age of innocence in Austin. I was 4 at the time, lived in NW Austin, and while I don't remember the exact night or event, it was ingrained into our parents' minds from then on. We still enjoyed the best childhood and had freedoms to go play in the neighborhood until sundown without having to report home, etc..but it always loomed over the parents of NW Austin especially as kids got old enough to work, drive, etc.

Hope this truly is the proof that puts the story to rest.

Hopefully the remaining family members can take comfort in closure despite never getting justice on Earth. He's serving his sentence now

On the bright side, when he was surrounded by the cops and shot himself, he didn't do a good job and survived for 6 days. I can only hope he suffered as much as possible in that process

Definitely remember that one. Lots of press at time and remember seeing true crime on it. That use of DNA based on relatives is solving a lot of cold cases and identifying crime victims.

How did he end up in Austin? I had just moved to Dallas from Austin in 1990

I was always surprised something with the DNA didn't get linked sooner, which indicated whoever did it had been dead for a long time. Not necessarily linked in the 90s as the technology and databases were still somewhat immature, but sometime in the past 15-20 years. But this guy offing himself in '99 apparently kept him from popping up in any databases until he was exhumed in 2018 for another crime. Not sure why it took 7 more years, but glad it has happened.

Cmon really? That article is piss poor crap. Hardly ties the supposed serial killer to the murders. So the cops and dna forensics developed a male strand of dna that ties a dead guy to this crime? Super convenient.

There is a presser on Monday, so this is incomplete information.

There was someone that found a partial match to his DNA in 2018 through investigative genealogy and had his remains exhumed at that time. Using his full DNA sequence they were able to find him a perfect match for several other cases.

It's possible that the Austin PD ran his DNA through CODIS once again more recently and got a hit this time whereas they were likely unsuccessful in the previous 34 years.

That was a really tough one. The two Harbison sisters who were killed lived down the street and around the corner from where I was living at the time. You'd see them out walking their dog in the neighborhood and then just like that they were gone.

High School friend of mine was the manager of that yogurt shop. She was one of the last people to see those girls alive, and that has been a burden on her ever since.

I was 6 when this happened, but my mom is a Lanier HS grad (same general area she grew up in) and I remember her being absolutely distraught over it and she was upset about it for quite some time, like the whole city was really. It was a core memory for me.

She called me on the way home from picking up dinner for the kids tonight and she said "The Yogurt Shop murders were just solved!" and I just instinctively yelled "NO!" and she said "Yes!" and then I mentioned about the docuseries on HBO.

I know the degen is dead now, but I hope this news brings some sort of peace to both the parents of the victims as well as those of the falsely accused and imprisoned.

Wife and I were relocated to Austin in 2000 and this was still a topic often discussed and remained in the media. nine years later. At the time, I honestly thought it has happened recently.
