a county with 64 people and a budget revenues of $61mil for 2026. And it looks like they plan to spend $20mil to refurbish that little courthouse, another $10mil to build a firehouse. I'm not saying the locals are already taking the cash...but........lots of $126k county jobs in that budget.

Surviving the climate is one thing.

Surviving your freeloading, no conscience neighbors will be the real challenge.

Gotta wonder where this Tanner guy is getting all of his money.

Especially now that USAID is shut down

If it's accurate that he bought a couple 5 acre tracts without electricity, water or plumbing then he didn't need much of anything

Yeah, I'd put my money on the people moving there not staying for very long. Once they realize how barren it is and there is nothing to do, they'll leave.

They will all open businesses and turn it into a utopia for Queenz and Kangz!

So we will have a desert version of Wakanda?

That's cheaper than I even imagined. This isn't a well funded adventure and if theyre having to find things that cheap then they arent buying generators/gas/etc. You aren't growing anything there either especially without water

Loving county is very sparsely populated for a reason.

They'll figure it out before too long.

Say.... Roughly next summer

Free is still way more than I would pay to live there.

Here's an interesting thing in my mind. If they can stay out of trouble long enough to get the sheriff elected then they're safe. However, those thugs are gonna have a really tough time staying away from other people's stuff and wander into town.

Pretty soon half of them will be in jail and ineligible to vote.

Or dead. I would imagine most people in Loving County are well armed and would not appreciate someone breaking into their homes or trying to rob their business.

All the freebies in the world that they could make the county government provide will still be hard to offset the fact that you're living in a hot, dry, remote area. This sounds more like that group that was going to make their own commune in Colorado only to find out that luxuries like water, electricity, and sewer services are hard to live without, not to mention that it's hard to grow crops on the side of rocky hills/ravines.

No, this is some guy who is looking to make some money. Gain power, enact laws to benefit yourself and a few key others and then profit. Sounds like the money would be coming from oil perhaps.

They should pre-empt his attempt by merging with a neighboring country. How hard is that to do?

It would be however hard it is to get legislation passed and maybe the constitution amended

Counties are subdivisions of the state. You can't just merge two counties on a commissioners court vote

So the State could potentially step in...
Much like the State had TEA takeover HISD (also a political subdivision)
Haven't there been threats with Travis County and/or Austin as well?

Haha you have nothing. You don't have cops. You have a sheriff and maybe a couple deputies. Loving County would be the definition of FAFO. You dont move there, you're born there.

Wikipedia estimates Loving County's population as 48.

What happens if they need to hold a trial and literally can't find 12 adults without prior relationships to the litigants to serve on a jury?

Change of venue to a neighboring county.

That's the thing.

They think this is some place that will be easily taken over.

Youre either born there or you've married into it. If you work there you belong to your employer.

They arent going to be treated well. They will not be able to go to the taquerias or be getting a warning on a ticket from the sheriff. You're in a rural community that has had to make do for way too long. They dont play by woke rules and there's nobody you can whine to either.

The state can't just "step in" and merge 2 counties, like TEA can take over a school

There would have to be legislation and possibly a constitutional amendment

You can't just give houses and land to people for free. Somebody has to pay income tax on that. I sure would like the IRS to take a look at all those recipients.
