Authoritarian regimes of BOTH the left and the right have a history of inventing opposition groups that don't exist to justify repression and crackdowns. It's a classic, textbook policy.

Was just reading about an example from Uzbekistan, in 2005 when the government massacred 700 people and claimed to be fighting a group that didn't exist. Then President George W Bush (rightly) condemned it. Then we lost a major military base there but that's another story.

Antifa was around and being violent in the NW long before Trump became a thing. They just changed their focus to Trump when he was elected, likely because their bankrollers changed their priorities.

What it meant in 1944 is not the same in 2025, but go ahead and live in the past. Let me give you a hint. The people in the streets beating up anybody who they disagree with are the fascists. Go walk through an antifa gathering in Portland wearing a MAGA hat and see if they act like people who believe in the constitution and the 1st amendment or if they act like fascists.

You realize that Antifa has been around for well over a century. In post WWI Germany, they were trying to gain control of the government. The Germans voted for a slightly less radical left wing group led by Hitler.

Of course all of it was hidden behind Puritanism instead of our modern woke-ism, but the whole thing sounds very liberal to me!

McCarthy was trying to get people to notice that Hollywood, academia, and media were all being turned into leftist centers of influence.
