Great with halting aid. Should have already happened but military intervention? Please, God, no.

Quote:

Trump said in a post on Truth Social Saturday that he had instructed the Defense Department to prepare for possible action in Nigeria, where he said the U.S. could go in "guns-a-blazing" with the goal of wiping out Islamist militants in the country. Trump also threatened to halt all aid and assistance to the country if it "continues to allow the killing of Christians."

The U.S. provided some $550 million in foreign aid to Nigeria this year, compared with about $880 million the previous year, according to U.S. government data.

If we are going to intervene in Nigeria, then why wouldn't we intervene in Sudan, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and all others that Islamists are about to take over? Are any of these countries strategically important to us? Our only base on the continent is in Djibouti so that's the only strategic asset we have there.

The Russians are abandoning Africa as reported in the Mali thread and while China has made inroads they'll get rolled by the Islamist as well, eventually. Thus, it's not like we are giving anything up to another super power by not getting involved.

Did you say "Oil?"

Now, why would America get militarily involved in any part of the not "America First" world for things like oil and other things that can make private companies lots of money, ahem, I mean, "American Interests?"

Come on, man.

We don't need their oil.

Rare earth metals I get, but we need to exhaust all other options before going to war in a fourth world, disease infested ****hole like Africa. Nigeria has 237M people. That isn't too much smaller than the US and that's just one country on a continent that could fit 3 USA landmasses inside of it.

It's a big, daunting place.

Threats (negotiation tactics) and actual action are two totally different things. Trump fights "wars" with tariffs and the American economy. The way it should be done.

If that is all he's doing (Art of the Deal), then fine. But we know he has pivoted full blown to foreign policy to try and seal his legacy. That's fine too and he largely kicks ass here, but going to war by picking and choosing which Christians to save on a continent rife with Christian persecution is all kinds of slippery slope.

Fighting the Crusades in Africa is desert sandbox waste of US lives and treasure all over again. Hopefully, this is just verbal pressure.

I did not say I approve. We don't need their oil but if we don't want the already shaky global trade system to completely collapse we need to make sure the raw materials that run the planet are available on the open market. We need to keep it alive until our offshored factories and material processing is back inside fortress americas (north and south).

If the chaos that is coming kicks off before we get ready it will require drastic measures that our current political system will have a hard time dealing with without possibly marshal law.

Then on the other hand, maybe he just going to give all the Christian's the world over asylum.

Never know with Trump.

Don't disagree on the rare earth supply chain risk. That's critical. I just hope we aren't unnecessarily going to war in Africa when we don't need to.

It looks like Nigeria is one of the top producers of bauxite so this likely has nothing do with Christian's and more to do with that. So there is at least some strategic importance there.

What a clown you are to think that boots will ever be on the ground any more than already are in Nigeria. There have been US Boots on the ground for decades in that region. AFRICOM on any given day will have 5,000-6,500 on the continent. If Trump decides to take care of business in Nigeria, he will pull our boys back and drone the sh** out of them and be done with it. And the left will go crazy, even though they were silent when their savior Barry was droning countries and even droning Americans. For years, the Obama administration refused to confirm or deny specific strikes, under Obama, the US conducted drone strikes that killed Americans citizens abroad, primarily Anwar al-Awlaki and two others associated with him, that shined light on everything, but there were many others. Obama's actions were justified under secret legal interpretations of the post-9/11 war powers, and they to this day remain controversial as precedents for executive authority and due process. So spare us your nonsense.

Trump may do something I don't totally support so let's get all riled up.

This is Trump sending a trial balloon up. Not the AD trying to hire Mike Stoops before knowing how the fan base will react.

Lawd, you would have thought Trump send a division to Lagos for trench warfare based on some of the responses so far.

Excuse me for reacting to the POTUS telling us that he's preparing to go to war in Nigeria.

From now on, I'll just assume he's lying.

(I totally recognize Trump's Art of the Deal negotiation tactics, but this is still something worthy to discuss and be concerned about - pearl clutching. Lord that's a gross oversimplification.)

I was not intending it as an attack on you so my apologies if it came across to you that way. But it does show that folks tend to get quickly worked up on things Trump spouts on about.

It is America First to pay attention and be ahead of conflicts that can escalate and cause broader issues.

It is worthy of discussion.

I do not believe Trump is lying, but I also do not think he has imminent plans to go into Nigeria.

No real dispute of your post, but on the italics --- didn't like Obama, but that wasn't really one of his bad actions. Criminals are citizens only in the most nominal sense of the word, and terrorists even less. By that point they are closer to traitors. The interpretation seems fine.

Whatever isn't an argument or debate, it's a surrender.

Let's expand a little so we can take you off suicide watch. Let's see, what couls be a "possible action" by the Dept or War? Hmm how about offering a humanitarian evacuation non-combat operation? Offer to evacuate evacuate any US citizens or provide humanitarian evacuation for anyone in crisis situations that wish to leave Nigeria. He could deploy support forces for non-combat missions, enable medical assistance, logistics to evacuate friendlies, in support of the non Boko Haram Nigerian government or in support of a regional humanitarian mission. Trump has a working relationship with a lot of leaders in the region. And maybe it's just a coincidence but the Boko Haram insurgency began in July 2009 under you know who, mister enabler of all things radical and islamic. They ran into hiding in 2017, and then tried to bow up in late 2018, but Trump let them know it wouldn't be tolerated and rattled his saber and the islamist thugs were driven into the Sambisa bush. But the minute Biden was in charge they ramped up the christian killing again.

Possible Action covers a lot of things short of war, so no I don't know what you mean.....

Well, I'm sick & tired of the GLOBAL Christian genocide being ignored by Western Civilizations too preoccupied with their own Christian persecution & damnation (like here in the U.S. & especially in the U.K.); frankly, I fully support Trump utilizing drones, both big & small, along with lazer-guided bombs & helicopter gunships to strike back at these Islamic terrorists. Maybe decisive & overwhelming firepower is necessary to send a "zero tolerance" message to other countries & European organizations (ie. United Nations) who are guilty of turning a blind eye towards Africa's genocide of BOTH Christians of any race AND White folks living there.

Who knows, maybe Greta the "Doom Goblin" will choose to speak out against Christian genocides & diasporas happening in Africa & elsewhere, such as in India & Syria; "Please help us Doom Goblin, you're our only hope!"

"Suicide watch". Speaking of Herculean leaps.

Look, I don't want us getting kinetic in Africa. That's it. If we are talking about non-combat rescue operations of our own people, then hell yes I'm obviously in favor of that. Performing that action is obviously not what Trump is implying here though and you are being obtuse as hell if that's what you think he's saying. Initiating a non-combat rescue operation does not constitute a threat which is what his statement was.

We can probably both agree that his statement is his typical extreme starting point in how he negotiates and gets things done. Hell, if I'm the Nigerian government I call Trump's bluff and let him come in and get kinetic because they sure as hell can't stop or won't stop Boko Harem on their own.
