Edit: I see the say "because" in the second tweet, but I read the article and they offer no other evidence that it was a deciding factor in the case other than that it was a defense presented.

Valid point. I'm assuming he plead not guilty since there was a trial and I'm sure his defense wasn't "he used the n word".

I read a bit more on the Oregonian's article, and basically the defense was self-defense, that the other guy was the aggressor, and the slurs were just offered as evidence of that.

I don't know - I wasn't there, but the DailyMail article is certainly more biased, with key facts omitted.

And you make it an issue of getting into words or motivations central, rather than actions. Put the greatest onus on the one that resorts to physical violence first.

Go to a system of punishment for actions and don't worry about the occasional miscarriage. Overall you will have greater order and justice. Perfection is impossible, and shouldn't even be considered an obtainable goal.

The biggest problems with juries are that they are never truly objective.

The same case held in a red city would have had a very different outcome.

Hell, any attorney worth their salt knows what counties (red or blue) are going to give them the better odds to get the result they want.

It's completely stupid. The soft bigotry of low expectations.

If a white person calls you this word, you are free to attempt to murder them, but if a black person says it, its perfectly fine, acceptable, and no correction is necessary or required.

It should not be okay in either situation.

And "those people" are free to attack ANY white person, at ANY time, b/c society decided to give them a 'free pass' without EVER considering "those people" would resorting to lying about the N-Word being said to justify their unhinged impulsivity &/or calculated criminal acts of violence.

The law even states mere words don't justify physical violence unless the words of another are words that threaten violence/ harm OR constitute an unambiguous invitation to 'mutual combat' where such is permitted- provided both parties agree; lastly, mutually-agreed combat is mano v. mano & never mano v. homey & all his friends joining in at the same time!

It's been the get out of jail free card for a long time. In fact it'll get you jobs, keep you from getting fired, get you admitted in to colleges you don't deserve, get you benefits you didn't earn, etc.
Blacks should be screaming to the rooftops how good this country is to them because at this point they can literally get away with murder.

Imho that's a civil rights violation BY tHE JURY, acting as an agent t of the state to deny justice based on the first amendment.

So glad I just moved back to TX. Oregon keeps getting weirder and everyone in Eugene and Portland just worships Tina Kotek as governor while she is turning the entire state into a clown show.
