So do poor people have fireplaces in their homes or old school cast iron wood stoves to warm their cockles?

I will bite. What was it about firewood banks that led you to feel compelled to open a discussion on firewood banks?

Sign of economic time? Government waste? State of society taking care of / not taking care of their fellow man?

Some of that alluded to in your OP but to many it comes across as a weak troll versus spurring discussion.

Regarding the $8 million, I would say that 98% of it was spent on something other than firewood.

One linked article shows an LDS program to help out Indians. Two things there, LDS has more money than God himself so they should not need any help with their program.

The other was a program on… Atlanta. I assume Georgia but same wood apply to the town in Texas. Poor people are typically not the type to be cooking or heating with firewood. This is particularly true in urban areas.

If this was a story about $8 million in firewood to keep Appalachian families warm and fed for the winter deep on the hollers of North Carolina, then you may have people here willing to pitch in.

If you indeed want to make the world a better place, then attempt a discussion.

I can burn half a wheelbarrow full of wood on any given chilly night. That will last about 4 hours. I'm trying to figure out how much wood a wood bank would need to serve the wood needs of those who would need wood.

I got some mesquite fields they can come collect from. I will even let them do it for free. I bet some people in the Hill Country will let them come collect cedar it from their sites for free.

Put one cedar log in your fireplace, and I can guarantee you'll never do it again.

Juniper.

Pines are also poor for fireplace but it's mostly about density.

You oily woods like juniper and many pines just need a little seasoning.

Unless you chopped down a sequoia or bought your firewood in Lebanon you are not burning cedar.

Follow me for more useless wood information.

Technically ashe juniper. Old fence posts cut and split are great for kindling, but it pops like crazy and stinks to high heaven when you burn a lot of it.

Crap in east Texas you can't give firewood away.
Enterprising folks will charge you to come get it.
Young guys who used to go out in woods now want to buy it delivered and stacked since they have money. Poor folks don't want to fool with it, they got utility vouchers.
BS OP.

But what if - and just hear me out - you could get the government to pay you for it?

A lot of old loggers figured out how to get FEMA contracts for debris removal. Some bigger fish may have figured out a new way.

Another old way was that pulpwooders took cash for wood, sold the ends for firewood in cash, then collected either welfare or disability, and took rental and utility assistance. Those guys had more disposable income than I had!!

Poor people in South Texas dont need wood, they need a space heater that won't burn their house down or kill them with CO if their chihuahua kicks it over.

Our 1940s house doesn't even have a fireplace and neither do many others built postwar inside the 410 loop.

Something like 0.4 percent, the second lowest in the nation. I live 'in the city' but don't know a single person with a wood stove they use for heat in their primary residence.

Apparently no one is.

In Northwest Colorado where I live, if people need firewood in our community, they notify the food bank and some of us volunteers are dispatched to help provide the wood. We do not have a firewood bank, but more of a collective of people that donate our own to the cause. I cut around 4-5 cords a year and usually end up donating one or one and half a year.

Which is noble, how its supposed to work and involves no bureaucracy or gubmit funds.

Kudos to you and your community for looking out for your neighbors.

The wood economy continues to be interesting. Here is a report of a veteran that needed emergency free wood and the folks who provided it. They have an organization for veterans who need free wood to survive.

During Snowmeggedon the family out at Messiah's ranch gave away trailers full of firewood to people, many of whom were without power. One of the owners posted here about it. All they asked in return was to consider making a donation to the ranch.

All that to say people got firewood who needed it for free or a fraction of the retail cost and all without the government getting involved. I think we'll be all right.
