Looks like Trump is doing what all politicians do, govern by what the polls say.

I'm actually surprised that he, of all people, is stopping this. I guess he must really be concerned about the midterms, because nothing else comes to mind as to why he's stop doing what his hardcore base still supports him doing.

I would like to think that doubling down and getting another X million illegals out, to cut the welfare budget, as well as say there are now X/2 more jobs available to Americans -- would help our economy more.

There is an easy solution. End the filibuster and pass national voter ID mandate, end MIBs, end ballot harvesting, add the seats we lost because of the rigged census, etc. The Dems can't win.

Estimates I saw last week that up to 2.5 million people have already left the country voluntarily. One of the reasons for the mass roundups and random big raids was to encourage people to leave on their own. Obviously it's very difficult for anybody to come in right now but we need more people willing to self deport.

All presidents talk a big game and rarely deliver. Unfortunately for Trump, he talks a huge big game and voters, for some reason, actually believe that he will be able to do what just can't be done no matter who is president.

That he even tried with his issue says a lot, and is definitely more than any republican president would ever dream of doing.

He may be back tracking, but at least he's backtracking from trying.

Those here illegally prior to Biden ironically should hate the Biden administration for his out of control open border. It really screwed it up for them. Especially legitimate TPS recipients from Venezuela. Even though Trump supported TPS in his first term he now backtracked and put thousands of people in limbo.

Trump already closed the border, he is directly going after drug cartels (and by default Chinese chemical warfare against our nation with fentynal) and now is softening his stance on those here without a criminal background.

Trump understands there was no feasible way to kick out 40 million people.

I still think a version of immigration reform is on his agenda.

He literally campaigned on getting the worst of the worst out first. The challenge in sanctuary states / cities is that without cooperation ICE defaulted to wider sweeps.

That has caught more "everyday" illegals and polling has shown most Americans do not want the deportations to include Abuelas and you oopsie illegal nanny / housekeeper / handy manny.

But Noem and others including folks like Stephen Miller want more of what has been happening. Balls out deportation.

I think it's absolutely fair to be critical of this change but this was not a switcharoo. It's a dispute mostly internally on how to most effectively implement policy.

The message that the abuelas being deported with mass sweeps is Dems fault because they wont cooperate with ICE, whilst true and valid, has not been received positively by most Americans.

Ergo this change.

Destroying benefits given to immigrants will do way more good than deportations, anyways. His track record on that has been pretty good. SNAP stuff, the elimination of loan guarantees to immigrants, all great starts.

Regardless, common sense tells ya that as more people have people they know or knows someone who knows someone who has been deported, they support will wane.

So the more you clamor about x illegal was just caught after 55 arrests then you hear a story about grandma getting clipped a month ago cleaning a church and she's been here 37 years… then people don't believe you are targeting just the worst of the worst first.

A change in policy and some better messaging gets this back on track. Some of the folks claiming Trump "taco-ed" here are clutching the pearls so hard the price of diamonds is going down.

We need ICE checks at ERs. Healthcare is so expensive becuase if you're paying for a family of four you're actually paying for probably eight.

My first reference to this was from a very conservative poster on the business board. And it tracks with what i've seen in the market in the last 4-5 years.

Tech is the best example. If you are with a company riding the AI wave, its great (NVDA, OpenAI, AI jobs within big Tech). If you aren't then things are absymal. Unemployment is low. Great. But job mobility is non-existent, and that's problematic. Economy is doing well for some, absolute dog**** for others.
People voted for Trump because they were tired of Biden's ***** Economy needs to get better for everyone. And he's running out of time to deliver.

Reducing illegal immigration is one of the things he's done right, and needs to double down on. If OP article is true, that's a big misstep.
