I just got off the phone with my sister. She is in great pain. She could barely talk due to having a tube down her throat all day, but it's now out of her throat. The hospital wants to send her in two days to a rehab center nearby which is near her home and friends in Flower Mound. She wants to stay in the hospital because the nurses and staff are excellent (Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Flower Mound) but they can only give her physical therapy once a day and the other does it three times a day. Aetna is the problem. My sister thinks they will reject it but her daughter has the handbook and is a real fighter in these matters. Rosanne is in good hands with her daughter.
Rosanne has great friends, especially from her church. She had eight visitors today. She is receiving lots of prayers but I am asking for more from you, my friends here. Oh, she didn't fracture her hip - it was her femur and shoulder. She has osteoporosis anyway and she broke three ribs in the last month doing simple things we all take for granted.

Thank you all for your warm responses and prayers. May God bless each and every one of you.

Updates as I get them.

Yikes, prayers for your sister to have a full recovery and for the insurance company to channel some humanity and understanding.

My dad was in and out of hospitals for a few years. The standard pattern became in the hospital until they addressed the immediate issue. Then to rehab for 2 weeks. After two weeks, insurance didn't want anymore rehab facility. And he was either released home or sent to a skilled nursing facility, depending on some evaluation they did.

The PT is super important and more is better. Dad fought the PT at first, but eventually came to that conclusion that it was important. After that, getting as much PT as possible was his goal. At that point, he had been to several rehab facilities and then insisted on getting into the facilities that did better with the PT.

None of that was broken bones, so there may be some differences.

Praying for your sister.

Prayers as well (again).

Women are eligible for scans (DEXA to look for osteoporosis every 2 years by Medicare. The earlier it is seen, the more effective the treatments.

Guys (almost always) have to pay out of pocket. But can find reduced prices at many places specifying "self-pay" and "pay on same day". Guys tend to get osteo less frequently, but on average the results are much worse for us. Well worth a periodic check as you get older.

I hope she recovers fully.

One older guy I know got a lanyard for his cell phone a few months ago so that he will have it with him if he falls.

I got a lanyard for mine, too, but so that if it slides out of my vest pocket, it won't hit the ground and get smashed like my previous cell phone.

I've fallen three times in the past five years, all because of tripping. Only once did I have my cell phone with me and that was the time I needed it most since I tripped on the roof in the dark while it was snowing. I couldn't get enough traction to get up and had to call someone to help me up.

Please excuse me, but laughing your life choices. The last time I broke a leg I was on a steep driveway covered with ice and then about 6 inches of snow, wearing flops - clearing the rear window.

My wife instituted new rules.

Rocky, praying for Rosanne to be willing to go to rehab, that your niece has success with the insurance, and that the insurance company has compassion. I also pray especially for pain relief. We praise God that so many are praying and that Rosanna has a good church with people who care about her and the she has family who love her and have her back.

It was a flat roof on our office building so I wasn't in much risk of falling off in the snow.

I did know one man who fell off of a roof and hit his head. He survived, but he was never the same. He was quite sharp before, but often very confused afterwards.

Rocky,

About two years ago my now 75 yo MIL fell and broke her shoulder and ended up with a titanium shoulder. And now she has a 103 MPH fastball, it's really incredible to watch! Ok, not really.

It took quite a bit of rehab but she's fully recovered and doing well. It'll take some time and hard work but your sister will come through this. Best of luck to her. She's in our prayers.

Thanks for that and everything else you wrote. I will tell my sister what you said to cheer her up. She will love it.
