After reading through the Old Testament, Judges in particular, I believe that the best you could hope for in life is to be the subject of a wise, benevolent king. Conversely, the worst lot you could get in life is to be the subject of an evil king. Democracy is an acknowledgment that the prosperity under a wise, benevolent king doesn't outweigh the risk of oppression under an evil king.

Because losers on both the right and left desire a totalitarian government.

Far, far more common on the left (they want a Soviet Union style system), but there are those on the right who desire some kind of king or dictator, usually as the head of a faux-christian theocracy.

I listened to a guy about a year ago in triggernometry advocate for a benevolent dictatorship or monarchy.

Basically, the gist was a democracy where everyone had the vote code not sustain itself, could not effectively innovate, could not effectively spend tax money fairly.
