Not in favor of a 50% increase - that's just way too much, way too fast. It'll be wasted. Maybe give them an extra $100b - but that's it.

Agreed. I would go as far as every dollar of fraud they find and eliminate, they get that same dollar back.

Any increase would be a reward for unaccountable spending. Until they can pass an audit they should not receive any increase in funding IMO

I love me some Trump and want a strong military, but I'm a hell no on this. There is so much waste in the military, and this comes from someone that served for over 8 years.

Call me a hater, but the majority of the people I served with joined the military because it was the best financial decision at that point in their life. We need to stop pretending that most in the military join because they want to "Serve". A substantial portion are doing it for the money/benefits. Which is fine, everyone needs money, but there is no reason we need to be allowing service member to retire these days after 20 years, with full benefits. Most these people have never once been put into harms way or been close to any battle field, yet after 20 years they get a pension for the rest of their life. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Don't get me started on the scam/fraud that is Dissability Pay which so many military members abuse (of course those who are actually hurt in battle should receive, but some minor back pain from picking up cargo on a US base should not count)

There are SOOOO many ways the military can cut back on waste. Another half trillion just gives them more to waste.

Well we do still have payroll, infrastructure, and maintenance to pay for. Can't just start winding up when you're already in trouble. But we absolutely don't need this increase.

China is growing its budget too, but given they are catching up, that still exemplifies how the problem isn't the amount of spending so much as how well we are spending it.

Waste like the Zumwalts, the LCSs, the Constellations, and the now-shelved DDG(x) program have put the navy on track to be overtaken by China very soon, if not already. And now we are building glorified coast guard cutters instead of modern frigates, and entering into development hell on the Trump class which will likely never materialize.

And we will be relying on the Burkes until 2050 at least.

The navy desperately needed the DDG(x) program to be successful, and now we are all but doomed to fall hopelessly behind at sea.

Quit taking Trump literally. If you don't understand that this is about negotiation and leverage both with Congress and in foreign policy you really aren't paying attention. He is trying to intimidate our enemies and friends to make sure he gets what he wants and it is working. If you don't think for instance that Russia isn't going to be more cautious with us or that China is now far less likely to invade Taiwan you really should wake up. Realize as well that the fact we demonstrated that the Chinese and Russian tech was useless against us in Venezuela sent a hell of a message as well. All of this is causing a LOT of chaos with all the right people.

Walk softly and carry a big stick is always a winning strategy. In this case Trump doesn't have to even increase spending he just needs to make folks think he will because no one else can. If you want to get amped up about every bold proposal Trump decides to send out while he is taking a dump though you are a fool.

While it doesn't make the numbers near equivalent - China does not report the SOE (state owned entities) in their official numbers for military spending. Since they are state owned, much of those budgets are reported in commerical and industrial budgets from the State.

• AVIC - largest chinese defense contractor
• CSSC - biggest shipbuilder globally (has both military and civilian lines)
• CASIC - missile production
• CASC - missile production
• NORINCO - tanks / artillery
• CSGC - ammo
• AECC - aircraft

These all add another $100B - $150B in military spending. Most estimates put the comparitive number for China over $400B.
