Given that the public was as leftist or not in a given time period, Carter then Biden. Since others have thrown him in, Obama between the two. Biden was so off putting and "out there" because a ton of the American public went that route of craziness. Obama started that move making the public feel it was ok. The only non-terrible Democrats since the Civil War have been Cleveland and Kennedy. The former because the Presidency had limited power, the latter because a nut killed him after 22 months in office, so he had less time to screw up. LBJ did that for him.
