These people are not normal, they have a strong propensity to be dangerous (deadly), and should not be on the streets. Period. By nature of their self determination that they are not really what they are, they are divorced from reality already. When you don't accept, or they have an issue with you not accepting their incorrect fantasy (and that is what it is), they have a pattern of twisting off like a wing-nut and people get hurt.
If they refuse mental help (counseling and mental meds), remove them from society. No one should pay a price because the mentally ill person's fantasy is not socially accepted.

Kids like that tend to latch onto something which makes them feel special and part of a group. In the 90s, they were the goth and grunge freaks.
Others get groomed into it by their teachers, mother, or the Internet. Not unusual for teenagers to feel weird about their bodies due to all the hormones and changes they're going through. This is why most kids who have feelings of being trans grow out of it after a short time, especially when they're not having adults push them into it.

My recollection from the news conference was that the reporter first used the word "gunperson" because the police didn't say what gender the shooter was. The officer then repeated "gunperson."
