NYC's operating budget was 120 billion last year.

Houston's was 7 billion.

Lost Angeles' was 14 billion.

Clearly New York isn't taxing the rich enough.

Dont forget that Mamdani bumped it to 128 Billion. So he's blaming Adams, yet he increased the budget another 7% from last year.

From the other thread but relevant here - his budget is $10B higher than the entire state of Florida with 25% of Florida's population.

Absolute bonkers.

I ChatGPT'd the delta between nyc and LAs budget. Didn't make sense they would be that far apart considering their similar fiscal dysfunction. What I found is nyc's budget wraps programs that are covered by state and county in LA all into one budget. Schooling for example is not covered in LA budget - separate entity. When you look at overall combined for LA, it's also massive and bloated, just like NYC. Social programs and schools are the biggest items.

This is how it's done today, and how it's been done since 1918 in Russia.

It was used before that, but it was refined and is used incredibly well today, mainly by Democrats but also all political movements.

However, when nearly ALL of your policies are either pathetic and incompetent, then it's a tried, and true method for political power. Some with a voice will raise hell about raiding the retirement and pension funds, but will very likely be supported by the local media, much like the NYT covered for AOC's disaster in Germany by stating her performance was basically an aberration.
Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.

LA and NYC are both losing residents in droves (especially the high tax paying earners) so you have services for less residents but increasing the budget and subsequent tax burden on those that remain.

Talk about a death spiral. Once again, socialism is undefeated.

Amazingly, no matter how many times it's proven to oppress and kill everyone that adopts it, it keeps coming back.

The zombie ideology.

For context, Mamdani's proposed budget for NYC is larger than the budget passed for the entire state of Florida.

So, 26% of that budget is just debt service but it still takes $94B to run the city year to year.

That debt service number is why the national debt is the most important problem we have in this country that everyone in DC (especially on the Democrats) just laugh off as not important.

NYC is spending a quarter of their entire budget on stuff that does nothing to operate or improve the city itself.

I don't think it's 26% for debt services...social services. Also, not really running the city! I believe their debt services is $8-9 B/year...very high still.

Well, it says it right there on the graph though. 33/127 =0.26

Gotcha, most of that is teacher pensions I believe. Long term liabilities …either way, not running the city. Big problem

There are many reasons from my limited dive into it. The most glaring right off the top is the amount of $$ they spend per student in their education system. $42k/student! That is massive. I believe national avg is $20k/student. Texas $14k

NYC has 1 million students. Cut their education cost down by even 25% and they are in budget surplus. Not gonna happen though.

And it shows.
People in New York are smart. They elect folks like Mamdani and AOC.
Texans are Neanderthals. They elect folks like Cruz.
