A growing number of Democrats are trying to divert attention away from President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday through their absences amid a limited set of options for peaceably voicing their displeasure with the administration.
A number of Democrats will instead attend the "People's State of the Union" event held near the Lincoln Memorial.
The event, described as a rally, is organized by MeidasTouch and MoveOn Civic Action, a pair of left-leaning media and activist groups, and will focus on criticisms of Trump's first year back in office.
The event will draw senators like Ed Markey, D-Mass., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Chris Murphy, D-Conn., Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Tina Smith, D-Minn.,
On the House side, Democrats attending will include Reps. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., Becca Balint, D-Vt., Greg Casar, D-Texas, Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., John Larson, D-Conn., Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Calif., Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., Emily Randall, D-Wash., and Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J.

Trump is apparently going to double down on tariffs tonight. Regardless of whether you think his broad-based tariff strategy is good for the country, I don't think it's a winner politically and will undermine his desire to retain Congress in the upcoming midterms. Most folks don't think the eventual gain from tariffs -- if it ever materializes -- is worth the pain here and now.
Inflation is down
Wages are up
GDP is growing
Trade deficit is declining
What pain is being caused now by tariffs?
The disconnect is he is loudly proclaiming tariffs as good for America, but people aren't feeling it. Inflation is down from the Biden years, but it's also stubbornly hanging around 3%. PCE inflation for December just printed at 3% and economists expect it to potentially move up a bit in January due to tariffs. Their words, not mine.
The "trade deficit" doesn't mean anything to everyday Americans. And as a practical matter, we continue running annual deficits of 6% to 7%, adding to the outrageous national debt. We kept taxes low but did nothing to reduce spending that moves the needle.
The key concern today is "affordability." He would do much better to focus on that topic and what he is doing to improve things for Americans than his obsession with tariffs. He comes across like he's a wearing tin foil hat, ignoring what people really care about. And that will absolutely nail you in the voting booth.
He's done a lot of good work to eliminate excessive regulations, promote the availability of low cost energy (gas prices!), and many other things. The body of work is there, but his public messaging is not.
None of that has anything to do with tariffs.

When President Trump heads to Capitol Hill tonight to make the case for his new approach to tariffs, he will face an audience growing skeptical of his trade policy.
Among voters, some polls show Americans opposed to Trump's tariffs by a nearly 2-to-1 margin. Just this week, a new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll found that 64% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of tariffs, while only 34% approve.

The little brother marrying terrorist is bringing some woman that was arrested by ICE. Of course they'll be portraying her as a victim.
I hope they let the dog come in with the other guy.

Some of the men's team will be there, but the women will not. They declined citing academic and professional reasons. NHL starts back up tomorrow, so I'm guessing some of those teams want their players back today for some practice.
Two minutes of unhinged leftists hating on the Men's USA hockey team because Kash Patel celebrated with them.
