Conservation RESERVE Program. That is, for the most part, retired CROPLAND dedicated to wildlife. There are riparian areas where grazing is not allowed, but that is a minor contributor to fewer grazing acres available.

At the peak (2007) CRP took nearly 37 million acres out of production.

That number is currently less than 26 million

Contracts are for 10 years, so lots are eligible to go back into production each year. If it profitable to do so, people will take it out of CRP

They raised contract prices about 3 years ago and started to get more acreage put back in.

I am really unsure how it gets resolved quickly, to buy $3,000 cattle now if a person got out of cattle operation years ago how can they afford to get back if if we have sharp price move back down.

It seems like stability doesn't exist.

Also, someone smarter than me please explain:

Feeder cattle around 800lbs trade for break even to 8-12 month selling price on fat cattle. I am assuming that is because the packers are involved in buying cattle and putting them in feedlots themselves?

If the lone farmer is stupid even to buy cattle at break even for a feed lot or even higher than break even I guess the packer just laughs and them and appreciates them doing that.

How on earth is that the math on raising cattle? That seems like straight up a monopoly controlled price rig.
