Cubans are more likely to vote Republican, given they've seen the results of communism. Of course the DemocRats will support the Cuban government's right to protect their waters.

Probably doing something illegal.

The typical Florida speed boat with 10 passengers and guns just going down to Cuba and getting into a gun fight with Cuban law enforcement.

I shared this story before on this forum, but it's been awhile.

In 1985, at 21 years old, I was on a Coast Guard cutter transiting from the Yucatan Channel toward Key West, FL for a 3 day refresh and resupply turn around in the middle of our drug enforcement patrol in the Caribbean and Gulf. Our helicopter -- on routine patrol within a certain radius of the ship -- detected a disabled American sailboat just a few miles off the Cuban coast and drifting toward it.

We retrieved the helicopter and hustled over there to assist the sailboat. At this point, our cutter and the sailboat were literally right on the international boundary offshore, and our navigation systems were failing. We didn't really know exactly where we were.

A Cuban navy gunboat approached, informed that we were in Cuban waters, that we should leave immediately, and let them take custody of the American sailboat. Our captain refused that demand and ordered GQ (General Quarters -- battle stations) on our ship to defend our interests. Downstairs, the radiomen were sending messages to US Dept of Defense requesting assistance.

In what seemed like an eternity but probably only 15 minutes, that Cuban gunboat kept circling us and demanding that we release the American sailboat. We refused and stood ready for the worst. Our cutter was equipped with a manually-operated 3 inch cannon and several 50 cal machine guns, and while plenty for drug runners, was no match for a naval gunboat.

Little did we know, but the US was launching fighters from Florida toward our location. I assume the Cubans got drift of that, because they abruptly left, and we continued on to Key West with the rescued sailboat in tow.

Pretty obvious this was a human smuggling op.

W/ at least 10 on board, you have to assume they had already been picked up in Cuba and were headed back to FL...

Which makes it more incredibly stupid that Stephen Miller and Kristine Noem suspended TPS for Cubans and Venezuelans.

This story is starting to lean towards the overthrow scenario.

"The brother of one of the men who was killed after taking a U.S.-registered speedboat into Cuban waters and allegedly opening fire on the country's border patrol said his sibling was fixated on overthrowing Cuba's government.

Misael Ortega Casanova, brother of Michael Ortega Casanova, told the Associated Press that his brother had fallen into an "obsessive and diabolical" quest to free Cuba from its communist government."

Still doesn't make any sense to me. What kind of consumer speedboat can comfortably carry ten adults? I know Fountains cannot.

Center console fishing boat with a bunch of Yamaha outboards is what they are calling a speedboat?

The good news is that the other 9 boats made it through.

It depends upon their cargo.

Cuba story just doesn't add up at all. They called it a speed boat. it was a 24-foot, 1981 Pro-Line center console fishing boat registered in Florida (Registration # FL7726SH). The boat is linked to a Miami-based owner and had been docked in the Florida Keys, Big Pine Key to be exact, according to the registration. The boat had a single Yamaha 300 hp outboard motor

Loaded down with 10 people it was hardly anything close to a speedboat.

The boat involved in the shooting off of Cuba's coast on Wednesday may have been stolen from the Florida Keys the day before, according to a report from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. This photo shows the white truck authorities say belongs to the suspect Hector Duardy Cruz Correa.

The victim said Cruz Correa did tile work for him, and he did not have permission to take his boat. His multiple calls to Cruz Correa went unanswered, and he believed that "Hector took his boat to go fishing," the incident report states. Later Wednesday, the victim started to get calls "from news media about a vessel that was taken to Cuba and involved in a shooting," authorities said. He contacted the sheriff's office and said he wanted to press charges against Cruz Correa.

Meanwhile, a neighbor told deputies that on Tuesday evening, she had noticed a man drive to the property in a white pickup truck and board the boat, which she found odd because the vessel's owner didn't "usually go out that late."

Who is Hector Duardy Cruz Correa?

Cuban authorities later identified Cruz Correa as one of the men who were killed in the confrontation at sea.
The victim told authorities that the suspect has family in Cuba, including two young daughters. When asked about his last conversations with Cruz Correa, he said the suspect had been "trying to repair a large boat with twin motors" which was having issues.

The victim said he let Cruz Correa borrow a trailer, in which he "put another large vessel... that he was trying to repair as well." He said he didn't know why the suspect might have been trying to repair the vessels.

This is propaganda nonsense from Cuba, there's no way that little boat was loaded down with 10 people and all this crap, and a gunfight breaks out and there's not a single bullet hole or scratch on the boat, just not buying this crap.

BTW, Coast Guard requires any boat with outboards to have more than one for going out further than line of sight off of the coast. As my late uncle learned when he was heavily fined when the CG had to rescue him after being lost for three days off of the coast of Florida.

Loved my uncle but he was brilliant in his medical field but knew crap about boat motors. Just had fouled spark plugs. Which pissed off the CG more so he was required to take classes in addition to the fines. he took it as a challenge and eventually received a commercial license as a ship's pilot.

LOL. Explanation? The Cubans are lying. Anyone remotely familiar with pleasure boats know that 24 footer with a single 300 horse Yamaha outboard would not hold all of that, plus ten adults. Stupid to even suggest it.

And look at the boat, not a scratch or so much as a splatter of blood and it was supposedly in a firefight with the Cuban Coast Guard?

They're full of crap is what it is. That's close to 2000 pounds of equipment and they had ten adult males on board, let's say they all weight about 1600 pounds to be generous.

That 300 Yamaha Weights: ~551

4150 pounds?

  • According to Proline that hull rating is:
  • Max persons: e.g., 8 or 10
  • Max weight: e.g., 1,800 lb (this would be total allowed people + gear + fuel + engine)
  • Sorry but that thing would be taking on water on a flat day

Can you imagine trying to trim that sucker to get to planing out?

ETA: That much weight,(allegedly) outboard offset to the side and not center? So not happening!
