That's kind of the issue. A lot of good, decent people, especially conservatives, are turned off from running for office. Or just focused on normal lives with work, family, friends and community.
Agree.
I have thought about it sometimes, but the reality of politics, even at the local level, is just so off-putting. It has stopped being a battle of ideas and has become "who can drag the opponent further down into the gutter" so we end up picking the least unlikeable candidate.
I am like almost everyone, I have made mistakes in my life that are between myself and my family, or professional errors in judgement, or conduct, that I recognized as wrong, paid the penalty without squawking, and overcame.
It's called life.
And it has made me a better, smarter, more thoughtful and considerate person. Anyone in this world who presents themselves (other than Jesus Christ) as a saint, is either a liar, or someone who has never lived in the real world.
I don't trust people who haven't lived in the real world to lead.
But, I don't want to hang my human failings out for every wanker who thinks they've never ****ed up something to try and judge me, or to portray them as as who I am today.
More importantly, I wouldn't want to expose my family, or friends, or profession to the judgment of fools who think they are without error and think they have never ****ed up.
So. I completely understand why decent people don't want to get into politics.
Oh yeah, and only rich people can afford to roll those dice now-a-days.
