Separate and apart from whether companies get refunds, or the overall wisdom of tariffs, or the simple fact that I despise Democrat politicians, their marxist agenda, and lying lips... this move is pretty shrewd politics.

Trump himself called for a $2,000 tariff dividend check to Americans. Gonna be hard politically for him to object to the concept, especially since he and Bessent are on record saying they'll just replace the over-ruled tariffs with other ones that make them whole. Who knows, he might even outmaneuver the Dems and call for his dividend checks again and dare the Dems to try and block it.

Of course the Dems' angle is "tariffs are bad for you and mean ole Trump raised your cost of living" while Trump's angle would be "tariffs are Making America Great Again" and you deserve a dividend to share in the success.

As a practical matter, we don't need another round of government handous that will just fan the flames of inflation.

The big picture: A growing number of Democrats, however, are declaring that Americans are owed billions in compensation, which amounts to about $1,700 per household.

Driving the news: That includes New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday calling for the federal government to "refund all tariff payments to New Yorkers."
  • Several other Democratic state leaders have made similar demands, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
  • And 26 Senate Democrats announced Thursday the "Tariff Refund Act," a bill that would require U.S. Customs and Border Protection to pay refunds, prioritizing small businesses.
Between the lines: Democrats' $1,700 refund pitch inverts Trump's own playbook for generating tariff support, promising $2,000 dividend checks amid the policy's broad unpopularity.

Meh. It's hard for me to care about things like this anymore. They'll never stop until they've killed the golden goose. Both sides have proven that the only thing they won't try is free markets or less govt intrusion.

Trump Promises $2,000 Tariff Dividend
Quote:

"People that are against tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the richest, most respected country in the world, with almost no inflation and a record stock market price," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. "A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone," he added.

[...]

Since Trump announced his "Liberation Day" tariffs in April, tariff revenues have climbed sharply from $23.9 billion in May to $28 billion in June and $29 billion in July. Total duty revenue reached $215.2 billion in fiscal year 2025, which ended Sept. 30, according to the Treasury Department's "Customs and Certain Excise Taxes" report.

We were already expecting a payment so maybe this is something the whole country can agree on.

Sounds like we're just arguing over the number now, and the sides aren't that far apart. And it's the dims that want to give out less. Bizarro times indeed.
Would this be inflationary? Sure seems like it would be inflationary.

I would settle for the US not sending money to "learing" centers.

They are brilliant at playing the game. Evil, but absolute masters of political chess and propaganda. Have to give them props.

Or a refund directly from the DNC coffers that USAID laundered money to.
