When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted, and so far from being a guarantee for the enjoyment of those inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression.
In such a crisis, the first law of nature, the right of self-preservation, the inherent and inalienable rights of the people to appeal to first principles, and take their political affairs into their own hands in extreme cases, enjoins it as a right towards themselves, and a sacred obligation to their posterity, to abolish such government, and create another in its stead, calculated to rescue them from impending dangers, and to secure their future welfare and happiness.

To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World-
Fellow Citizens & compatriots-
I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna - I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man - The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken - I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls - I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch - The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country - Victory or Death.

I went out to Washington on the Brazos this morning as part of an independent writing project I've started.

I wasn't repping the Aggies.
I just wrapped up a lengthy contract writing Tx history books for middle grade libraries for a publishing company. I've always loved Tx history and decided in the last few weeks I wanted to start "re-discovering it" on my own. There were so many people and stories that I never learned about in public school or taking 2 semesters at A&M of Texas history or reading several books about it in the last 20-30 years.
I decided to do some writing that blends research, some historical fiction storytelling of the events that happened, with a little photography and the aesthetics of visiting the places where it happened. Those are my initial ideas at least. I'm hoping to make it at least a 10-year project leading up the bicentennial in 2036.
I'll DM you my substack if you'd like once I have a few writings up.

Written account of the siege by Dr Sutherland that was sent to find Seguin. Only written account by someone that was there. His nephew was killed at the battle. He later founded Sutherland Springs where a few years back an idiot went to a church and mass murdered many there. The whole Dewitt Colony collection is good reading.

I wasn't born here but got here as quick as I could. Married a Texas gal, had Texas offspring and Texas grandchildren. Texas has been damn good to me!
