In Arkansas, Aaron Spencer defeated the county sheriff in the Republican primary.
He is waiting trial for the "murder" of 67 year old Michael Foster who had taken his 13 year old daughter. The county sheriff he defeated was the one who arrested him for murder. Michael Foster was free on bond for charges of previously molesting Foster's 13 year old daughter.

Barbara Elmore was reportedly doing everything she could to keep the public out of the trial. She had already had her gag order over the defendant last year. She wanted to limit the total attendance at the trial to be limited to 55 people including all parties, news media, and the public.
Also, she disallowed the the defense from filing at least some motions in confidence. Considering that there were undoubtedly documents about the so-called victim's abuse of his 13 year old daughter, it seems quite reasonable to file such motions in confidence.
Winning the Republican primary for sheriff in a heavily Republican county seems to me to be a good indication that Foster will likely be acquitted in the trial.

On the night of the shooting in October 2024, Spencer woke up to find the girl missing from her bedroom, left in his truck searching for her and found her in the passenger seat of a vehicle Fosler was driving, court documents show. Spencer forced Fosler's truck off the highway and, after an altercation, called 911 to report he had shot the man, records show.
Spencer's attorneys, Erin Cassinelli and Michael Kaiser, maintain their client acted within the law to protect his child from a predator.
"We believe it is clear that Aaron was justified under Arkansas law in taking action to protect his daughter and himself, and we believe that will be apparent at trial," Cassinelli wrote in an email to The Associated Press.

Aaron Spencer defeated Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley in Tuesday's primary elections, according to unofficial results posted by the Arkansas secretary of state. He would not be able to serve if he is convicted of killing Michael Fosler, 67, who at the time was out on bond after being charged with numerous sexual offenses against Spencer's then-13-year-old daughter.
Spencer's attorneys do not deny that he shot and killed Fosler but maintain he acted within the law to protect his child from a predator.
Spencer won more than 53% of the vote with all precincts reporting, according to unofficial results. Staley, whose department arrested Spencer in 2024, conceded the loss.

Spencer has pleaded not guilty and is out on bond while awaiting trial, which was originally scheduled to start in January. The trial was delayed after the presiding judge was removed from the case. A new date has not been set.

Spencer still faces that murder charge incompetence from Circuit Court Judge Barbara Elmore caused multiple delays as the state Supreme Court was forced to step in more than once, ultimately removing Elmore from the case entirely and a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for later this month.
