Illinois struggles with the concept of bans

Alcohol sales will be limited Saturday night on the University of Illinois campus in anticipation of potential property damage and excessive celebrations if Illinois beats Iowa in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four, Champaign city officials announced Friday.

The emergency order will include a requirement for all bars on campus to sell alcohol in paper and plastic cups, a ban on all sales of "packaged liquor" beginning one hour after tipoff and a rule that no liquor establishment on campus can sell more than a single keg to an individual customer. The order will also include a ban on any delivery drivers bringing alcohol to or from campus beginning one hour after tipoff.

Illinois curbs alcohol sales Sat. with Final Four at stake

Nothing helps a ban's effectiveness like announcing it a day in advance and creating an island of prohibition in a sea of retail alcohol sales within easy driving distance. I predict this "emergency" ban will be even less effective than the gun laws have been to curb shootings in that liberal paradise we all know as "Chicago".

If I was an Illinois student I would already be stocked up and maybe even be drinking by now.

Its next level dumb but par for the course on any idea that comes out of that **** hole state. I have extended family there and all they do is complain how much they hate it but yet still vote blue.

Regarding U of I, my uncle taught there for nearly 20 years and he was always amazed how such a great academic institution could have a student body so rough around the edges. Mostly Chicago area kids who obviously could not get into Northwestern.

Or could afford it.

One of my good friends is a Chicago native and an Illinois grad. He's far from rough around the edges.

As it usually is with things like this, it's not anywhere close to a large percentage of students rioting after a win and they're joined by very rough around the edges townies that are happy to burn and pillage.

Liquor laws are loose there. They allow liguor sales from 7am - 3am Mon to Sat. Think you can buy it at pretty much any retail store (grocery, Costco, drug stores, etc.) as well

Used to work for a company headquartered in Iowa. Never met professional drinkers like the ones they had up there. They would give Brits a run for their money.

Busch Light is a separate food group in Iowa. Now the true professional drinkers are in Wisconsin. IF you thought iowans could drink, head to the rural parts of Wisconsin!!

True that. When I first moved to Minnesota, we admitted this guy from Wisconsin to the ICU with liver disease. I asked his wife about his drinking habits and she said he was a "Normal drinker. Well, for Wisconsin."

I came to learn that this meant that he drank rotgut brandy from sunrise until passing out hour on every day that ended with "Y".

What most people call "severe alcoholism", the drunken Sconnies call "Tuesday".

Lived in Iowa from 2006 to 2017.

Alcohol is sold everywhere. Probably even Learing Centers. Illinois is the same.

Just wanted to clarify that gun bans in Illinois and particular Chicago are ineffective because Trump is illegally importing them from border states.

Bondi needs to grow a pair and stand up to Trump to put an immediate stop to this. I voted for Trump 3 times but when I heard Brandon Johnson making this revelation the other day, I have had to pull all my support.

Regarding alcohol sales, you are direct in target. Nothing drives demand like limiting supply.

Wow, had no idea. Not much of a drinker but knowing how cold it gets in that part of the world, those stats are understandable.

Have you seen the prices?
Northwestern is among the most expensive at $90k+ a year. U of I is a top 10 school in engineering and computer science and is around $40k. So many who get into Northwestern still go to U of I because it is economical.

I remember going out there to "have a legal beer on campus" in the spring of 1991. A flight came in, and a family of four got off the plane. They grabbed a meal in the snack bar where we were drinking. It was a mom, dad, and two young boys. The young boys were wearing A&M football jerseys. The names on the back "BARONE".

They did not arrive with the same fanfare as Jimbo Fisher.
