(Sorry for the long link, I'm on my phone and can never figure out the URL shortening stuff without the desktop shortcuts.)

The former head of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission and an associate who led a nonprofit have been indicted on multiple felony and misdemeanor counts. They are accused of misappropriating funds and self-dealing.

If I'm reading this correctly, while she was the head of the HRC she allegedly funneled grant money to a non-profit where she had previously served on the leadership team and was still a signatory on their bank accounts. The guy who had taken over that non-profit was her boyfriend and was allegedly funneling money back to her in part to pay for her rent and other personal expenses.

It's also alleged that funds which were supposed to be spent to help homeless children were instead spent to hire her son on a high salary and she had direct access to his bank account as a signatory.

Of note, this is a local investigation by the San Francisco District Attorney. The people of San Francisco had enough a few years ago and hired some new people to run their city and it seems to have gotten at least a little bit better there.

Good post, but definitely dog bites man.

It would be much more interesting to see a liberal charity that was not stealing funds, not giving huge payouts to execs, and not taking advantage of those who they claim to serve.

Not very smart. The HRC had me thinking it was connected to the scumbag from Arkansas who suicides people.

I'm baffled that no one has pointed out this is not paying her son. IT'S EMBEZZLING MONEY FROM THE NONPROFIT.

You can search Charity Navigator by cause and find hundreds of of charities across the political spectrum that are doing good work. You can also find the ones doing not so good work.

And good on the San Fran DA for rooting this out. Stealing from charities should be punished much more harshly.

To be fair, the son may have been homeless without the "salary" so was it really embezzlement or just supporting a child?

Was he doing work that he was paid for?

Were the employment position and the payments approved by any kind of governing body?

But as long as you're being "fair" I guess
