Just got back from a legal forum at SMU on the tariffs. Had Ron Kirk, some guy from Akin, some economist from who knows where and a moderator, a trade attorney. I am a CPA so I was there to hear about the reimbursements and timing. It turned into an insufferable hate fest for all things Trump. I should've known better, but it was billed as a "discussion: and was an echo chamber of a common narrative. Globalism is good and the big bad populist Trump is a horrible person and people should vote "better" next time. FU Kirk.

Globalism is good and all nations are welcomed to charge the US tariffs, but the US is Satan if it charges tariffs!

They what free trade, cool. You give us zero tariffs, we give you zero tariffs. Deal?

That's free trade!

Tariffs are stupid, as is all liberalism.

That being said, they're probably progressives, so....they're even dumber than tariffs are.

Globalism blows, as does Keynesian economics.

exactly. the stereotypical economist was literally praising Adam Smith as "our lord" and spread the message that all countries were created and are now equal. And Kirk was pressing that the US should accept as many foreign students as possible because of "mmmmm, intellectual capital" I wish I had just stayed at work,

If it's going to be a ****ing discussion then make it one. It was a narrative session.

Economists really hate that Trump shows they have absolutely no idea what they're doing. The tariffs were supposed to wreck the economy and send us into a depression, and they didn't even cause a recession. Economists were more than happy to float their theories and hope they never get tested.

I could have told you this without you wasting time at an anti-Trump fest. The refunds aren't able to go into the US Treasury from the CBP accounts while in dispute, and at least one court has already admonished the feds for not being quick enough. Lots of people on F16 will say they will never get paid out, but I think most intelligent, informed people are saying the risk is in the review of claims and (same as all other tariff cases) that CBP argues the imports were not classified by HTS or origin correctly.

The prices for the refund claims are going up, and that means the investors buying them will start defending them in court. We're even hearing from larger companies that they don't care about the possible negative publicity anymore because everyone will be making claims. My firm is actually brokering the claims though, so we're maybe a little closer to it than others. Helps that we found a strategy that makes some taxpayers walk away with more after tax by selling at a discount.

Yep the guy on stage even referred to the conversations he had with his other super smart, never wrong economist friends have had and I could only think of the 16 Nobel Prize Winning Economists...

Yeah, well, my General Counsel invited me and I figured I could get a little info from it. I didn't, other than to not accept any future invitations of his. So now, at least, I am one and done.

Given it was held on the SMU campus, I'm not sure I would have expected anything other than what you heard. Sucks to get stuck in such a time waste. Sorry.

He works for us, I get those from our insurance broker and our tax/audit provider.

Another thing that pissed me off (probably disproportionally to the importance) within the first 5 minutes the moderator referred to Liberation Day as April 20th 2025, it was April 2nd (I know this bc it is my birthday) so they lost all credibility from the jump and never recovered.

Oh an Kirk said the "attack" on institutions of higher ed is a very bad look for Texas Universities. He said that having new presidents at our two flagship universities doesn't bode well for those schools. I almost laughed out loud. What a joke.

You need a better tax and audit provider. Meet Augusto Pinochet, the best tax guy you ever had. He'll also help you sell (or buy) those refunds and even find you other ways to have more cash.

Yeah, thanks, will keep that in mind. What kind of Stars and Rangers tickets can you get me is the real question.

You'd be one of the few who goes for the rangers tickets. I have better luck getting people to Rough Riders.

SMU is hosting Ketanji Brown Jackson in May and had Romney last fall.

That's not scholarship; that's idiocy and propaganda.
