Why in the hell would you - or anyone for that matter - want to get a refund? That's allowing the gov to use your money interest free!

It eliminated some taxes on SS, yes it did.

Exactly I can't believe we are almost 3 pages in and no one said this. OP gets $5k and is excited to get his own money back. Adjust your contributions and put that money to work for you.

Uh, that's what I was lamenting in my post. See the last sentence in parentheses?

With that said, hell yeah I'm glad I'm getting my money back. Would you rather not get it back?

Refund? Refund?

No matter how much in estimated taxes I seem too pay, I write another check every April. And no, despite what the blowhard in chief constantly says, the bill did NOT eliminate taxes on social security.

Why in the hell would you - or anyone for that matter - want to get a refund? That's allowing the gov to use your money interest free!

It eliminated some taxes on SS, yes it did.

It most certainly did not. It provided a new senior deduction that phases out with income.

And what does a deduction - which lowers your income - do to your taxes?!

It eliminates the taxes you would have paid on that income, just like I said.

Get it?

If you are playing the game right, you are trying to hit $0. No refund; no OOP tax.

It is a head scratcher when people say they got more back on their 2025 return than they did in 2024 or owe less in 2025 than they did in 2024 and attribute it to the BBB or whatever. Unless your income and deductions and tax withheld were exactly the same in 2025 as they were in 2024, that is a fool's errand.

The only way to now how much the BBB benefitted or harmed you is to use your 2024 amounts using 2025 software/tax law, or use 2025 amounts using 2024 software/tax law.

Retired couple here with no withholding. Everything basically same; taxes for 2025 were over $2800 less than year before. Much appreciated as that is savings every year, until the democrats get in power.

Did read Tax Foundation said about 25% of tax reductions was due to the increase in SALT deduction.

Not a fun day. Paid a higher tax bill and hit with quarterly taxes. The former was my issue for underestimating and spending some fun money last year, but still frustrating when you worked a quarter to just pay Uncle Sam.

Taxes SUCK! Flat or no taxes for all please!

Correction: I've always cared; I've also said for years now on this site that it's not getting fixed. We are too far gone and the populace would revolt if we actually tried to fix it.

I paid WAY less this year. Liberals and Rhinos will think of any way to discredit the Big Beautiful Bill. The data coming in shows It's made a positive impact and they can't stand it.

Really? The BBB sure as hell didn't help the national debt. Projected by the CBO and CRFB to increase the debt by $3-$4 trillion through 2034. DOGE was a noble but horribly mismanaged mission. The admin is asking for $200 billion more in emergency funding to fight Iran. Lastly, isn't the admin wanting to raise defense spending by over 40 percent in the coming budget? So I'm not sure I'm seeing any real desire to reign in the national debt. Show me where I have that wrong. Sincere request.

Edit: Sorry. Just recognized your prior post. I respectfully disagree. The budget(national debt) can get fixed but someone is going to have to make up their mind to actually do it. Will take both sides of the aisle buy in(maybe that's the reality issue that you reference). Personally, I see it as a must do, not a discretionary task.

I thought you were referring to me since you were replying to Ag98.

As I stated above, no, we are not going to solve the debt. Ever. It's pointless at this juncture and too far gone. So, I care about it, but practically it's pointless to do so.

I understand your view better now. Thanks.

I just don't see where we really have a choice. I see a day of reckoning coming if we don't. Paying a trillion dollars a year in just interest is not sustainable and that value is growing every dang year.

This is the answer.

So, let's say that you're right. We aren't going to solve the debt issue.

That doesn't mean we have to continually make it worse. That's exactly what this administration has done and is proposing to do further. There's got to be some brakes placed on the spending. And after this administration is gone, the same will apply to the next bunch of yahoos. That's independent of what the side of the aisle the next admin comes from. Bottom Line: In my view, someone has to show some leadership and stop the spending increases. Soon.

Congress is not going to do it because they would get voted out. Too many citizens and businesses depend on all of that spending. As a result, both parties have already stated they will never touch entitlements which is 2/3 of spending. So, you've already limited yourself to 1/3. Within that 1/3, there is much money laundering, favoring, and blackmail within and amongst Congress. Everyone is scratching each other's back so you can't pull the string or it would cause everyone to fall out.

Furthermore, we are a fiat based, consumer economy so if you try to cut spending you break it all.

We will implode first and then you just have to hope whatever phoenix rises out of those ashes is a financially smart phoenix.

Really sucks but that's the reality.
