I'd be happy if the federal employee I fund sent me a thank you letter each April. Like those sponsored African orphans.

I truly believe that everyone should have to physically send a check to the government at each of their respective pay periods vs automatic deduction from their paychecks.

Would give everyone a whole new perspective of the government

I removed our property taxes from our mortgage payment in the last few years we had one. It's an immediate psychological mind shift when you do that because it forces you to save the money on the side in order to cover the tax bill. I did that primarily because our property taxes had risen to the point of equaling the mortgage payment and it helped my wife realize the true financial impact of owning a home since it was no longer buried in the mortgage payment.

To really put the tax burden argument into perspective, they really need to include the % share of total US income the top earners make in addition to the % share of taxes paid to the federal government.

While the Top 1% pay 40% of the tax burden, they only make between 19.5% and 22.4% of total AGI in the US.

Do you even itemize bro?

When the wife was working, her income, even after standard or itemized deductions, had us in the 25% bracket.

So the first dollar of income from the farm was taxed at 40+ percent.

Meanwhile, the bottom 40 pay nothing and many get money back. That's who is not paying their fair share and then they still get to help dictate the future of the country on top of it.

Representation without taxation.

The problem is that income tax was never meant to be a redistribution of wealth agent. And that is obviously what it has become. Gives politicians on both sides way too much power.
A flat tax or a national sales tax are the only obviously fair systems. Anything else is frankly evil.

Here's what bothers me: we sold our Salt Lake home (big market demand-got offers above asking price the day it hit the market), then with all the renovation we put into it we did very well. Then moved to Georgia. Federal tax filing will result in a $2,100+ refund of taxes paid through deductions from pensions/investment payments. So far so good.

The states of Utah and Georgia, however, took a combined $2,500 in income taxes owed after all the above. (We have a very experienced CPA do our taxes).

Never, ever allow Texas to enact an income tax!

Get the sentiment because if Texas did this you are likely going to get stuck with the same high property taxes but now with an income tax.

This is a depends situation on where you are in life though.

We are going to save $20k per year moving out of state. For us - Texas Property Taxes + Insurance > Other States Property Taxes + Insurance + State Income depending on the state.

Caveat: I'm retired and my wife's self-employment income is minimal. If we were still working our corporate rat race jobs we would stay here. Thus, it depends on where you are in life.

I just learned you're a troll. Seven people responded to your "Income inequality " post and you ignored all of them but you posted here taking a shot at someone lamenting their tax bill. If you're going to participate in political debate here that's great. I'm happy we have liberal minded individuals on this forum as it keeps it entertaining. But don't post then ignore the responses to your post. That's not debate, it's trolling.

"On one hand, we can't ignore the extreme levels of income inequality or the ever increasing percentage of poor in this country. It's simply a fact. If nothing else, it's a disease whose symptoms lead to crime and spreading blight within our cities."

Well, it is not simply a fact that the percent of poor has been 'ever-increasing'. That is false. Is the percent poor too high? Maybe. Debatable. We should talk about how we measure poverty before we state its trend. But by official statistics, it is not ever-increasing.

Income inequality. Is that increasing? It has, relative to some past time. It has also declined relative to some other past time.

While poverty is widely considered a bad situation, income inequality is not obviously bad. It depends on why we have inequality. I presume you are talking about some Gini coefficient to measure inequality. If inequality is rising because some who were middle class are now upper middle class or rich, is that a bad thing? What do you propose as the *correct* amount of income inequality? Certainly Marx or his followers have suggested an answer to apply to other people.

Finally, regarding official poverty statistics, they are rather badly misleading given that they don't include a lot of our anti-poverty transfer (welfare) programs. Our official measures don't include the very payments we make to fight the war on poverty when our officials announce the poverty level of income and thus define who is in poverty!

Phil Gramm and coauthors make exactly this point regarding official poverty measures in their recent book "The Myth of American Inequality."

I'll accept that you don't think you're trolling but I was one of those seven and there was nothing emotional about my post. Here it is to save you the search. Genuinely, the left needs to learn the following:

Quote:

None of your problems are because someone else makes more money than you and envy is a serious character flaw. If you aren't happy with what you make solve that problem, don't wallow in misery and blame others for your failures.

We have the largest middle class by percentage in world history and live in one of the few places and times where hard work and talent can be combined to achieve whatever you want to achieve. Believing otherwise reveals a complete lack of understanding of that very back truth which requires a lack of understanding of history.

The first point is a simple one. Elon Musk isn't causing any of your (in a generic sense) problems. I guarantee I can find at least one problem in your life caused by too much government, however. That's the real point. You can make a decision not to do business with rich people. Not sure who you're going to work for, but it's not hard to say, "I'm not buying a Tesla or Starlink" and not give Elon any money. Try that with a government that takes a meaningful amount of your money at gunpoint.

The second one is a simple statement of historical fact. There's never been a bigger, more robust middle class ever in human history. The rich aren't stealing your wealth, they'll selling you things you want and/or need for a fair price. Government, on the other hand, is stealing your wealth. First by taking a material amount of your money at gunpoint then by spending more money than they steal from all of us combined thereby creating inflation.

The simple truth is for most all of history there is no middle class. You've got the elite and the poor which means far more significant income inequality. Right here, right now is the exception to the rule and more government isn't going to make this better than it already is. Willingly giving money to a ruling class of politicians and bureaucrats is funding that ruling elite our Founders tried to prevent and too much government will destroy the wealth of the middle class. They're already doing it. Government is the problem. Always.

So there you go. Nothing emotional at all. Just simple truths and facts.

I'm not him but I'll answer the question.

1. Damn right. I'm pissed to pay capital gains tax.
2. I'm double pissed ObamaCare takes out even more cause he defines me as RRRRICH
3. In triple pissed the "too much investment tax" takes away even more cause I'm RRRRICH
4. I'm even more pissed cause too many people don't pay ****
5. And yes. There is even another layer of pissed cause many people get $1,000 taken out of their salary yet get $5,000 back as a "refund". AT LEAST we could just give them back what they paid. They already get tens of thousands in handouts.

Put a ****ing sales tax so at least everyone pays something. Just 2 or 3 percent.
