Ford has filed some wild patents including your truck collecting your biometric data and running through law enforcement data base, if you look to emotional it won't let the vehicle go into drive, and it will be listening to you so you get a custom ad experience.

As a part of the infrastructure bill cars have to have the kill switch by 2027. Ford seems to be gearing up to make your car or truck a rolling jail.

Sometimes companies file patents prohibitively or speculatively.

In 1996, when I was in highschool, I never would have imagined how much of our privacy we give away for free distraction games on our phone. The people filing patents about listening into your phone conversations and sending you ads based on those conversations were prophetic, but looked at like they worked for the Ministry of Truth at the time.

If this type of technology that Ford patented does become commonplace in 10 years, it would be nice to have a patent on it.

Ford also has patents on flying cars. Just as speculative.

I don't think you can really read all that much into patent filings. The guys at Ford that are tasked with filing patents have budget to spend, and have to spend it on whatever hairbrained idea they can come up with.

That's the point here.

If it has a camera and is part of a device connected to the internet or even home network, the ability has long existed for law enforcement and / or the military / government to use it to surveil.

Most if not all CDC drivers are on camera in their vehicle all the time and most are monitored with many already incorporating AI. Don't like it? Drive a Ford Edsel and keep plenty of spare parts.

Can't wait to be too emotional to drive away from a tornado, abusive spouse, or get a kid to the ER. Attorney's might not sue fir the 4th amendment, but they will line up for a payday

It's under the guise of drunk driving protection.

2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (specifically Section 24220), which mandates the development of technology to prevent impaired driving.

the tech: Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS): These use infrared cameras (often mounted on the steering column) to track eye movement, pupil dilation, head position, and blink rate.

Data Ownership: the law does not explicitly define who owns the eye-movement or behavioral data generated by these cameras.

Some effort to kill this last year, it failed. 2028 (or so) will be in all new cars unless the law gets killed

Freedoms and privacy are both illusions with our government. Sad to say.

Congress passed this legislation during the Biden administration. It's ALL new vehicles, not just Ford who appears to be taking the brunt of the pushback. Rightfully so. This is a violation of the 4th.

Then when dystopia takes over I have something else to drive and not worry about that crap

No, the second paragraph is dead serious. It will register how many times your eyes drift away from road, will flag you checking your cellphone, will alert you falling asleep.

For the government accessing… if it is technically feasible, no matter how costly, the government will do it. Whether it's abused, see Comey thread(s).

I once raced our 87 Toyota minivan out at Raceway Park in Baytown. I was still in high school so mid 1990s.

Even power braked the Silver Bullet to smoke the tires.

We were there to the candy paint, hydros and various lowriders, and figured why the hell not when they announced open races.

A government powerful enough to require this ks also powerful enough to ban older vehicles from using any road receiving federal funds.

Which is basically all of them. Sure you can own it, you just can't drive it anywhere.

Ford trucks with the Blue Cruise feature have a "nanny cam" on the dash that does this, and the best part is people are paying $50 a month to let Ford spy on them.

I assume the Venn diagram of those on the EV thread championing cheap Chinese tesla knock-off has ZERO overlap with the folks here concerned about this Ford patent.

I am a bit middle of the road on this. The trade-off of convenience and privacy is becoming greater, but people have for the most part just accepted if for better or worse.

BTW - Disney just filed more patents on using AI for loading of ride vehicles and other models to monitor your health, physical capabilities and the like to see if you are doing too much and suggest some churros, Dole Whip and an extended ride in the AC of Its a Small World cause your fat arse is about to pass out.

Gotchya. I was being a bit glib but see post above. It's a trade off regarding privacy vs convenience.

BUT, I firmly believe it should be opt-in and most certainly not government mandated. The concern remains about government being able to access via warrant (or less) whether or not you are opted in or out.
