They're required to have this from a Biden Era bill. Republicans had a chance to axe it but 57 of them voted to keep it.

The ever-increasing technological requirements being mandated by law is a big reason people are taking out 10-year car loans now.

A government powerful enough to require this ks also powerful enough to ban older vehicles from using any road receiving federal funds.

Which is basically all of them. Sure you can own it, you just can't drive it anywhere.

Putting a restriction on a company is easier than putting a restriction on an individual.

Making car companies put this tech into their cars is a back-door that Congress doesn't have the guts to require individuals to do.

Congress outlawing old cars isn't something they have done in the past, and I don't expect that to change.

I have one.

I also have a 2007-ish Tacoma that still only has 40k on it and doesn't need to ask anyone permission to start. Small, stripped down, AC but no electric locks or windows. Four cylinder.

At least three times a year someone will either ring the bell or leave a note enquiring about buying it.

It is like a street legal mule. Never getting rid of it.

Ford is just following the law by installing these. Why should Ford be sued when these have been mandated by Biden and upheld by the current congress?

GM sells more trucks than Ford in the U.S., based on the latest available data from Q1 2026. GM moved 204,425 fullsize trucks, while Ford's FSeries totaled 159,901 units, giving GM a lead of roughly 45,000 trucks.

Some RAM trucks already have similar cameras paired with the self-driving technology (basically cruise control and lane-keeping). The justification is that it will not operate if it senses that you are distracted and/or inattentive. I don't want the car to drive for me, and I especially don't want my car to spy on me constantly. You know this technology will be full of bugs and lead to all kids of false arrests and possibly deadly crashes as cars shut down in the middle of high speed freeways, over bridges, etc.

The first time someone has a medical emergency and needs to get to the hospital ASAP but the vehicle does not operate because the driver is perceived as being "too emotional to drive" and someone dies will result in an interesting lawsuit.

It's not just the surveillance issue, it's also the inability of modern cars to be repaired. With all of the superfluous gadgetry on modern cars pretty soon there will be no cars for the third tier buyer. Too expensive to fix,,, $27,500 for a transmission???

Amusing to see people on here swearing off Ford over this when every manufacturer has to comply. This isn't a Ford thing.

Another reason I'm buying a vehicle next year right before this crap gets implemented. I want to have a car as new as possible without this tech that will last as long as possible. I might also just keep my 2016 coupe and cover it since it only has 45k miles on it.

Sometimes companies file patents prohibitively or speculatively.

In 1996, when I was in highschool, I never would have imagined how much of our privacy we give away for free distraction games on our phone. The people filing patents about listening into your phone conversations and sending you ads based on those conversations were prophetic, but looked at like they worked for the Ministry of Truth at the time.

If this type of technology that Ford patented does become commonplace in 10 years, it would be nice to have a patent on it.

Ford also has patents on flying cars. Just as speculative.

I don't think you can really read all that much into patent filings. The guys at Ford that are tasked with filing patents have budget to spend, and have to spend it on whatever hairbrained idea they can come up with.

Always I've believed that if the tech has been illustrated in a movie (Hollywood), it already is being used in society to some degree, or will be.

It likely won't, but let's be honest. If they (congress) wanted that to be the case, LEO's would be required to enforce it, and there would be nothing anyone could do.
