Federal law: allows SNAP (food stamps) to be used for candy/soda
State law: SNAP allows states to set own "experimental" rules. >20 states (including Texas) prohibit these SNAP "sugar" purchases.

Congress just had a vote to outlaw SNAP paying for candy/sodas nationwide and 55 republicans crossed the aisle to vote against the new law.

Think of it this way.
  • When you buy a coke, you are also slipping your congressman a contribution.
  • And simultaneously allowing 40 million Americans their inalienable right to get fatter on your dime.
  • Which drives up the price of healthcare (you are also paying for)
  • Besides, the price of this stuff would go down, if taxpayers weren't subsidizing demand.
Such a no-brainer. Where is "leadership"? They are all bad.

I saw somewhere that SNAP costs the average taxpayer about $200 a year. Cool. If they want to buy soda with it, go nuts. I can't imagine being angry at someone for enjoying a soft drink.

Now imagine that person, who doesn't work but is perfectly able, is likely overweight and hates everything you stand for in terms of values and principles, stealing $200 from your wallet every year and buying lots of cokes with it. Then, they tell you they deserve cokes for some reason.

I can pretty easily imagine getting mad at that person.

They can enjoy anything they buy with their own money, it is fine to have restrictions on what they can buy with someone else's money.

Yeah f that. I work hard for what I make.

Taking money from me to give basic nutrition for someone that's hungry fine

Taking my money so someone can have a luxury item. And a coke is not a necessity so it falls in the category as a want not a need

So you vcant steal from me to give unnecessary luxuries to other people that aren't good for them in the first place

Nuts arent a soda... silly liberal.

But on a serious note, theres nothing about carbonated sugar drinks that is related to providing the nutritious food essential to health and well-being for anybody's grocery bill.

It's not their money that they're using to buy sodas, candy, and junk food. It's taxpayer money. These people ***** and complain that they're not able to eat healthy, and then they use our money to buy sugary crap with little to no nutritional value. They should spend their own money if they want that stuff so badly.

I'm about to go back to voting only 3rd party since none of these dickbags care about actually doing their job enough. What's the point?

We care because SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.

That isn't what they want or like. It is for nutrition of those who might not be able to afford it

You're asking why we care about the mole hill while ignoring that mountain it's sitting on.

It's not just $200. It's the fact that we know it's exponentially more than that. If elected officials can't support the taxpayers to say no to an easy $200, you think they are going to GAS about the tens of thousands you actually do care about?

Plus, it's not my responsibility to fund a permanent underclass. I donate to my church to help people who need it. The government hasn't helped a single person escape poverty in the history if its existence.

In the good old days if you wanted to have something that other people were able to buy, there was incentive to get up off your ass and work harder or longer. Boom, you had it and so much more.

Nowadays, there is only incentive to vote for someone/anyone who keeps giving you free stuff.

I wasn't aware that an anonymous opinion board carried that kind of weight, but sure. Yeah. I think anyone who cares about their tax dollars paying for cokes and candy on SNAP is actively looking for things to make them mad.

They can enjoy a soft drink when they PAY FOR IT out of their own pocket. If they can't then maybe, just maybe, they will stop putting their hands out and put them in a tool to make money, legally. And THEN buy the soft drink.

I think that you are the very problem then. There is zero need or reason to fund cokes and candy to any person for a supplemental nutrition program that is there to help them survive. I'm mad that you think that could be of any assistance or a proper usage of any funds.

IMO the problem isnt about what they buy, its the amount being subsidized. I dont disagree with the concept that you guys are getting at... but I also dont want the goverment chosing what people can buy on snap.

Not everyone on snap is fat. So are we going to have weigh-ins? Or just punish the thin people?

Wic tries to police what people buy and its a train wreck. The administration and oversight probably costs more than they "save".

Would you be upset if that money were to be used for crack, meth, cocaine, or pot? Those have literally the same nutritional value as soda. Hell, some would argue that pot actually has MORE. So...where do you draw the line? Is it more a matter of "it's your money now, so you can do whatever you want with it" or is it "meth doesnt make everyone an addict and ded so it's not my business if they decide to die because of it, it's only $200"? Literally both cause health issues over time, and you can NOT argue that they have any health benefits for any of these examples. In fact, just the opposite. By allowing these vices to be provided for free, it encourages a dangerous lifestyle and shortened life. Is that ok with you? Isn't the point to help people? You are literally advocating harming their health because it would be mean to deny them everything and anything they want because they want it.

Wheres the line...?
