Valor actually still means a lot and many of the tech wizards are fleeing blue states so don't think you're right there either. I tend to agree with you that calling this an assassination attempt is a stretch. However, he was busted by the Secret Service and not a DC street cop that makes me think there is more to the story. The story says the guy with the gun ran away, so maybe he was closer and more threatening to the WH at one point but was arrested further away. Still a stretch but plausible.

Looks like the southern boundary for the outer security perimeter is Constitution Avenue, which isn't that far from where this shooting happened.

From the WH proper, it's about 700 yards, give or take a few. I've read the actual incident happened near the Sydney Yates federal building, which is a bit further away at almost 2x that distance from the WH. But again, the article says it was near the *outer* security perimeter of the WH, not at the WH.

Context matters. The someone is from Elgin, Texas and brought a firearm to DC. When confronted by law enforcement, specifically Secret Service, he drew and fired his weapon. I believe that the prediction markets would put odds on Michael Marx' motives for bringing a gun to DC being something other than mugging Washingtonians on the street.
