Not entirely accurate. Individual bottle water was not a thing but large bottles of water were a thing well before the 80s. Many offices had that big Ozarka water fountain with the bottles on top. Hence the term about "talk around the water cooler."

At my grandparents' lake house, no city water available other than lake water pumped out of the lake in the 50s and 60s. Large heavy glass bottles were always there for drinking water, brushing teeth, etc.

(One time, my great uncle was on his to the lake house and had those bottles of water in the bed of his pickup. he also had some gasoline soaked rags in the back of the truck next to them. Sun bearing down through those heavy thick glass bottles acted like a magnifying glass and set them on fire.)

In the late '80's I was working for a predecessor of T-Mobile as an accounting manager. The customer service cube farm was right outside my office.

When the large Ozarka water cooler ran out in customer service, one of the reps would come by my office and sweetly ask me to change out the bottle.

One by one these girls got pregnant (six in total over the course of a year out of about 25) and they accused me of doing something nefarious to the water.

"I wasn't even in town that weekend," was my standard reply.
