This is odd. Especially the facts in the linked article. I had read he was a higher ranking CIA officer who used money for operations to buy gold. Now I'm learning he faked being in the navy and graduating from Clemson? Wtf? Is our government simply not doing background checks for these security clearances?

First thing that jumped into my mind is this had to be a decimal error like office space right?

A) how would they not notice 40mill

B) why are you keeping that much gold in your house?

C) has anyone checked storage units? One probably had a pallet of gold or cash like breaking bad.

I got listed as a reference by a friend when they applied for security clearance. I got asked so many questions I felt like I should have gotten clearance myself afterwards.

Gold BARS are, at the least, very suspicious.

I agree, though. The tag line shouldn't be "gold and cash;" it should be "illegally obtained..." (allegedly). This is a long the same lines as, "he was caught with a gun..." So? If I'm ever caught (for whatever) it will probably be with a gun.

$40 million in gold bars? If I did my math right, that's about 560 lb.

edit - 303 kg = 668 lbs. I was going off the spot price of gold.
