Why did a 14 year old have a pistol?

Read an article that said the prosecutor put a bottle of water on the juror stand and said Mr. Chow thinks a human life is worth less than this. I dont like this from prosecutors. Just present facts, not emotional pleas.

That said I'm not totally sure what happened in this case and will reserve full judgement.

Pretty much. The kid had a semi automatic weapon on him. I read the store owner has had to call the cops multiple times in the past years because of kids like this.

I fully support the jury on this one.

Hm. Hard to see how this could be self defense. Juries usually get it right based on the facts presented though.

Unarmed? I thought he had a gun but allegedly wasn't threatening?
BMX Bandit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
he had dropped the gun at some point during the chase, so technically unarmed when he was shot. no evidence the defendant knew that.

technically this was not self defense, but defense of his son. the dead thug pointed his gun at the son.

and to answer the original question, no south carolina will not burn over this.

One dad with an Alpha personality on the jury, and this kid doesn't get acquitted. At best a hung jury.

The reality is that a jury of 12 is almost always really a jury of 1 to 3 people that have the strongest opinion on the situation, and 9 to 11 people that will do whatever within reason in order to go home.

Don't point guns at people if you aren't willing to die for whatever you are doing that for. The end.

Sounds to me like a feral teenage thug decided his life was worth less than that. And I agree with him. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I concur, it was a foolish decision by the prosecutor. It is not merely the value of the stolen items, but rather the act of theft and the intimidation involved with a firearm.

The counterargument "What is the worth of a human life?" Is the act of self-defense genuinely worth the cost of a human life? Discussions surrounding "worth" are highly subjective and can be perilous in the context of an argument.

Defense's story not represented by the X post.

Quote:

The defense's theory rests on the idea that Rick Chow was acting in self-defense for his son, who they said was threatened by Belton.

The defense argued that Belton was acting "strange" and "nervous" in the gas station, which caused the Chows to question the boy about shoplifting. The attorneys said that Andy Chow didn't believe the boy, so he followed him out of the store to see what direction he was going so that he could report it to police. When Belton took off running, the defense said, it "increased the suspicion" in the Chows, who chased after. They said that at some point during the chase, Belton turned around and pointed the gun at Andy Chow, who backed away with his hands up. It was only then that Rick Chow unholstered his glock and shot the boy, the defense argued.

Tensions rose between the two legal teams at various points throughout the trial, with the defense at one point accusing the state of being "nefarious."

Judge Taylor, who had already asked the jury to step out of the room at that point, lost his patience with the defense team.

"If you have an ethical issue, go down the street. Stop accusing people of ethical issues in this courtroom I haven't seen anything unethical yet," Taylor said. "I'm tired of it."

The counter to this is that the store owner did not make the decision that a life was worth X amount of money - that was purely the decision of the perp.

No different than somebody breaking into your home or attempting to steal your car and getting ground checked int he process - they are the ones that decided that whatever they were attempting to steal was the value of their life, not the person they were stealing it from.

Great post.

For me, I wouldn't have even gave chase to the kid out of the convenience store. Not worth it.

But that's me. I don't own a convenience store. I don't deal with these ferals day in and day out. I don't live in the defendant's reality.

That said, I have been way past the point of deferring to the "FO" party over the "FA" party for many years now. Whether you take a gun to an anti-ICE protest and decide to fight the cops or steal from a convenience store. You made the decision to do that. If the reaction is harsh, tough sh**.

Oh, I agree.

But I'm guessing that the store owner hit a point based on history that he just couldn't deal with the BS anymore. Especially when he knows that the local police will do absolutely nothing about it. I completely understand that and can absolutely see myself hitting that same point if I were a store owner and constantly watched thugs steal my product over and over again.

Death by 1,000 paper cuts comes to mind. Sure, it's a bottle of water or a candy bar or whatever here and there and individually they don't mean much. But cumulatively those $2.50 and $5.00 thefts add up. And every single one of us knows that as time goes by, things escalate by nature. Next time that kid could easily walk in and just decide to pull his gun and flat out rob the store, or worse.

The real epidemic is lack of fathers, disproportionately within one demographic. For the most part, it's really only boys raised by deadbeat single mothers who don't care who behave like this. Almost no kids with a decent involved father act like this.

In black urban communities, there are virtually ZERO present, involved fathers. Or even good strong male role models.

Which is caused by welfare and Democrat policies. Until the 60s they had intact families and low divorce rates

No doubt. Our govt has incentivized/rewarded the destruction of the black family unit. I honestly don't see how they ever bounce back. Everything we have done flies int he face of this...

It's almost as if the more good decisions one makes, the more likely there will be a positive outcome versus the more bad decisions one makes, the inverse is likely.
