We need to start putting a new statues. Statues of current war, heroes, etc.

If we really wanna blow the left out the water, we need to put up statues of Trump. I'm not a giant Trumper, but would laugh my tail off to see how absolutely insane Democrats would go.

The Pisans hated the Genoese from about 1284 to 1860. The Genoese will still say, "better a death in the house than a Pisan at the door."

Similarly, the Genoese and the Venetians fought bitterly from about 1300 to about 1500.

Genoa kicked both of their asses. And everybody hates the banker. After Genoese government collapsed, Genoa ended up being a city state that was almost entirely controlled by the Bank of Saint George.

Columbus was from Genoa. When I read the article after three drinks, I thought about that history of hatred. I botched the delivery of the joke in the title, which is what I get for working in a bar.

It is essentially an article about the reinstatement of a Christopher Columbus statue in....Columbus, Ohio. The general over iew is how some statues removed during the woke temper tantrum during COVID are seeing a comeback.

I looked up the return of the Robert E. Lee highway marker in Charleston. It stood for many decades outside a local school, but it was removed for some reason in 2021. They city held on to it for a while until returning it to the rightful owners, the UDC.

The central park in Charleston is Marion Square. It is maintained by the city, but the land is owned by a local historic association. The UDC negotiated an easement from the historic association to place the monument in Marion Square on what is essentially privately-owned land. The details are interesting.

Quote:

In May of 1947, the Charleston Chapter 4 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), erected the Lee Memorial at the Charleston School of Math and Science (then Rivers High School) to mark the Lee Memorial Highway (King Street). In July of 2021, the school district had the memorial removed. We waited almost three years for the Attorney General, Alan Wilson, to enforce the Heritage Act but when it was clear that he was going to allow the statute of limitations to expire, the American Heritage Association recruited the UDC to be a Plaintiff and filed a lawsuit against the Charleston County School District and School Board in July of 2024. We waited until November of 2024 to actually serve the lawsuit in hopes that the school board would remedy the situation. They did not.

In their reply to our lawsuit, the district/school board shockingly claimed that the Robert E. Lee Memorial was not protected by the Heritage Act and that only Alan Wilson could enforce the Heritage Act which he had declined to do. We have a Republican Attorney General that is not enforcing the monuments law and a supposed "conservative" school board which fought us in court to prevent the re-erection of the Lee Memorial!

Working to attain victory even with the courts denying us standing, the Attorney General refusing to enforce state law, and the "conservative" school board leading the charge for cancel culture, we worked behind the scenes to secure a better location along King Street at Marion Square. The monument was re-erected in the early morning hours of December 10th, 2025! The historic preservation easement protecting the monument in perpetuity was purchased with $10 Confederate.

Same stuff happened in San Antonio. There was a statue of Lee in one of the parks that had been either paid for or donated by one of the genealogic/heritage groups many years ago. The city decided they wanted the statue gone. They group told the city that if they were going to remove it they wanted to take it back. Before they could reach an agreement, the city issued a work order to a contractor and had it removed in the middle of the night.

The group put pressure on the city to find out the disposition of the statue. The city finally relented and let a couple of group members into the storage area where the statue was being held. The report was that it had been damaged but not irreparably. The city still won't return it to the group though. They claim they will ultimately put it somewhere where it can be displayed with "appropriate context". My guess is they will wait around long enough until enough people forget and then destroy it.

There was also a Columbus statue removed roughly the same time. The Italians in town were pretty pissed off, but I don't recall what happened with that situation
