...run for Governor of New York or mayor of NYC before running for President in 2016? Before that year, he was at the height of his popularity with ordinary people, celebrities, politicians from both parties, and the media, including SNL and talk shows.

Bear with me. This is a discussion about perceptions that might have been different when he announced his candidacy for President. First, could he have won either of those offices mentioned above? Second, would there have been such vitriol cast on him if he had had a political track record?

Your thoughts. Please keep this thread straight with no personal attacks or derails that would lock the thread.
Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

It would make no difference with the left of MSM. If you're a Republican you're worth of nothing but derision and death. Doesn't matter your track record, history, how moderate you are, etc. You are worthy of nothing but complete destruction.

I don't think it would have made a difference, simply because the left is not angry with him because he lacked a track record. They hate him because he was and is an 'outsider' and not establishment, and he refuses to go along to get along.

I would ask Oprah the same question about the author of Hillbilly Elegy, which made the Oprah Book Club list.
It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.

Just look at Elon, he was a darling of the left before he "turned to the dark side" and then they were setting Tesla dealerships on fire.

They hate him because he passes policies that favor everyday peasants over the wishes and wants of the global elite, not because he is an 'outsider'.

Hillary accidently said the quiet part out loud with her "guns and bibles" comment.

It would have made a huge difference because we would have had a 3rd and possibly 4th term of Obama through Hillary. The damage they would have done would likely have been permanent by the time Trump came around later.

They hate all things with the R. It really got cranked up under W and has intensified since.

MSM loved Trump during the 2016 primaries, once he won the nomination, they turned on him. All to set up Hillary for a shoe in victory. Oops, they are just doubling down on the vivitrol.

it's an interesting thought

it would have made him a better leader and he should have done a term as Governor of New York then run for POTUS

certainly the first term of 45 would have been a hell of a lot better!

Are you referring to Obama's "they cling to guns and religion" comment? Hillary was the one who called all Trump supporters a 'basket of deplorables'.

Guns and bibles was Obama. Hillary was "basket of deplorables".

Anyway, you're correct, so is Backyard Gator. Those are contributing factors to the hate. But the single biggest reason they hate him is because he fights back. Like really, actually, hits back, and hard.

Trump understands the laws of the jungle like few, if any, prominent Republicans have in decades. He knows without question that the left can never be trusted, they will always play by their rules, and there is no appeasement. So he rams it down their throat, ever and over again. They don't have the slightest idea how to counter it other than the epic sh** storm, temper tantrum, they've been throwing since 2016.

I honestly don't understand why the media ever interviews Hillary. She wasn't the POTUS, Bill was. She lost in the election, and she lost badly. They keep deferring to her or Kamala, like their opinions on anything matter, and they don't. America rejected both for leadership roles, they need to sit down, shut up, and disappear.

Trump's greatest crime was defeating the worst and most corrupt major party nominee in modern history, HRC.

He slaughtered the left's sacred cow, ending their fever wet dream of Camelot 2.0.

What he did or could have done prior to that event wouldn't matter.

Oprah included Hillbilly Elegy in her book club when it first came out, and now I don't think Oprah is much a fan of the author.

On the other hand a term as NY governor or NYC mayor may have convinced him public office isn't worth the hassle.

As soon as Trump put an "R" by his name, he became the "enemy".

If Trump was mayor of NYC instead of president of the USA, the main differences would be America would have a lot more illegals in it, even more election fraud, democrats would get elected to everything, gasoline would be $8 a gallon, taxes would be meaningfully higher, Iran would be making nuclear weapons and putting them on ballistic missiles and America would be done for.

Trump is saving our country along with Elon Musk and those of us who voted for Trump and support Elon.

No, he was an R back in '12. It wasn't until he came down that escalator in June of '15 and announced that he became their enemy.

You missed my point. I wasn't talking about running for governor or mayor in 2016. If he had been either just after Guliani's tenure as mayor or whoever was governor around 2000 or so, would he have won those races? Would New York City continued to be what Guliani created? Would NY State been a better state with him as governor?
Would he then been able to run in 2016 as a presidential candidate without the animosity that he got without a political record? That's my question.

And, was he really a republican back then? I don't think anyone really knew.

Great hypothetical Rocky. If he ran after Giuliani, I think he would have lost assuming he ran as a Republican especially if it was with his current platform. Once things in the city were fixed and crime, trash service, homelessness, etc went back to acceptable levels, NYC was ready to go back to their roots.

The real challenge in the hypothetical is Trump has shown a penchant for changing positions based on what will help get him into and keep him in power. I'm sure many will attack me and say he doesn't flip but his track record shows he has flipped on many issues over his adult life and while as President such as abortion, crypto, TikTok, etc.

They never loved him from the moment his campaign began. It was instant hate. But they did love the circus that came with him because it brought eyeballs to their media so there was a certain amount of 'encouragement' from the press to keep the show going.
