If there is a rational argument for keeping this *******ized form of Filibuster around, it is beyond me. I honestly do not see, other than maybe Collins in ME for electoral reasons, why a Republican Senator would oppose getting rid of it other than sheer loathing of Trump. Anyone have a rational counterargument?

Ask the dems how they feel about nuking the judicial filibuster.

Fetterman seems like a roadblock there, so they'd have to make up a +5 margin (or +4 if they're in the White House).

The rational argument is that 3/4 of voters don't like or trust either party and are not interested in reducing or eliminating checks and balances that help prevent either groups of bums having a permanent seat.

Die-hard partisans on both sides can gin up in their minds all sorts of future scenarios that justify such a move, but they are a distinct minority and frankly don't even understand the downside of what they propose. National moods shift every decade and there is no permanent mandate for either party.

Keeping minority voices heard is a feature and not a bug.

I can't say I totally mind anything that leads to more gridlock and fewer laws passed

I don't care one way or the other.
Filibuster has gotten to the point nothing gets done. Nobody is getting to 60 votes.

But I do get tired of the "just wait until they're in charge" argument. We heard this through the 2020 cycle, that they'd pack the court and end the filibuster. They got the White House, Senate and House and didn't do any of that.

I don't see it happening in 2028 either. Still enough Senators around that view themselves as the adults in the room, but to be honest I think they like having the filibuster as an excuse when it comes to the tough votes on both sides.

The biggest difference is redistricting and the 2030 census which is a complete game changer for congressional power going forward. It's not inconceivable that the GOP will control the house for 10+ years.

When you factor the non stop slew of 6-3 SCOTUS decisions, I think it's more likely than ever before that a democratic controlled senate cross that line. They will argue they are limiting the break of filibuster to the judiciary (just like McConnell did to get Gorsuch confirmed) and to create a 1:1 balance between justices and appellate courts. The blueprint is already out on this.

The court will be their counter to a changing demographic and electoral map. Just look at what they are already able to do without control of SCOTUS and use the courts to subvert the constitution.

Maybe I'm overreacting (I hope I am), but I doubt it.

There were only two Dem Senators that refused to end it during that time and those two Dems are no longer Senators.

Fetterman has said he's not voting to end it after campaigning on ending it, so assuming he doesn't flip back, they'd need to flip 5 Republican seats from the current map, or 4 if the Dems win the White House in 2028. This year they'd need to go 4/4 flipping Ohio, Maine, Alaska and NC and that still wouldn't be enough. In 2028, almost every Republican senator up for reelection is in an extremely red state. Thankfully the senate in general should favor republicans because the dem populations continue to get concentrated in a smaller amount of blue states, so I'm ok with at least attempting to keep as much gridlock as possible.

I think its unlikely that Fetterman runs in 2028 and if he does, I don't see him securing the dem nomination in PA.
