Almost every day one of his literary devices becomes a dark prophecy fulfilled. We owe him a lot because he tried to warn the world and was ridiculed for it.

"The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it." ~ George Orwell

"The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history." ~ George Orwell

"All tyrannies rule through fraud and force, but once the fraud is exposed they must rely exclusively on force." ~ George Orwell

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day be day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except the endless present in which the party is always right." ~ George Orwell

"In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act." ~ George Orwell

"Free speech is my right to say what you don't want to hear." ~ George Orwell

"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth." ~ George Orwell

"There is no swifter route to the corruption of thought than through the corruption of language" ~ George Orwell

Great post!

Republicans read Orwell as a warning. Soros and Obama used it as an instruction manual.

Indeed. During the Spanish Civil War, Orwell was fighting against Generalissimo Franco with a brigade of international volunteers who were the useful idiot brigade of Trotskyites. He had his utopian vision burst when the Soviet backed Bolsheviks, the ones who were cutting off the breasts of Catholic Nuns on the altar, made killing the other socialist factions a higher priority than fighting Franco's forces. Orwell got shot in the neck and went home to England.

Not in the modern sense. Modern socialism is just repackaged authoritarian communism, i.e. late marxism, stalinism, and/or maoism. Orwell was fiercely, aggressively anti-communist and anti-authoritarian. He fought with the anti-stalinist militias AGAINST the liberals, socialists, and communists (who were ironically all called the "Republicans" at that time) in the Spanish civil war. He said in an essay that he considered himself a "democratic socialist" because he hated the British class system, which by the way so did the founders of the United States. Calling him an "avowed socialist" in 2025 without any context is laughably dishonest.

Orwell was a highly functioning useful idiot who believed that socialism could be successfully tamed and not allowed to progress to communism. He was right about communism. He was wrong in thinking that socialism could be done right so that it would not devolve to communism

Socialism in any sense is a non-starter.

Government gets too much power over the people.

Once that happens - it is over for freedom. Look at Europe (soon to be Europistan) and how the government runs over their sheeple.

Disarm them and herd. Throw people in jail for speaking out against the authorities.

Many leftist loons want that here.

The Brits voted socialism into office and they are sadly going to have to club and knife their way out of it until they reacquire guns. It's a sad prognosis but Ayn Rand was correct.

Yeah that's why all his books railed against what you now call socialism. lol.

It's been 20 years since I last read it but it seems to me lately that perhaps 1984's most prescient quote is:
" It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosersout of unorthodoxy."

What social media has done to and convinced so many young women of is incredibly frightening and sad.

Calling him socialist by today's definition of socialism is EXACTLY what he warned us about.

What he called totalitarianism is EXACTLY what they have now tried to self-label as socialism. His very point was that these statists rewrote language itself, and denied truths plainly observable with our own eyes and ears.

Weird, for some reason my post was removed from this thread. It is topical that the "two minutes hate" ritual depicted in 1984 is well embodied by the carnival barking nature of far-right media today.
