I have a friend whose son is interested in Nuclear Engineering. He is an out of state student and was wondering what things he should put in place to help his application to the program be successful. Any information would be appreciated. TIA

I worked as the grad program coordinator for six years, but left in 2018.

Have a strong background in math and physics. Take Physics C if possible and the highest calculus available.

Also, brief yourself in subjects about modern reactors, nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation. That is a growing field for research.

Lastly, have your student become familiar with shops skills. CNC milling, lathe machines, and welding. Lots of experimental research opportunities and most of the faculty ask their students to construct their experiments. Also start learning Python. Lots of computer modeling and Monte Carlo simulations.
