Does anyone think we trade up into the first round today? Nick's got a ton of history trading on this weekend (18 times since 2021), but do we trade up and grab someone like Byron Murphy or the Illinois DT, depending on how players fall? Ideally, we trade our later round picks and grab a top tier DT late first and then maybe Coop or a secondary player in the second and third rounds.

I wouldn't count it out, if the board shakes out in a way that a highly coveted player falls into striking range

Could be a good bet, I think I heard Caserio averages something crazy like 5 trades over draft weekend. I don't think we'll get Byron Murphy as there have started to be talks that he might be the first defensive player taken overall in the top 10. What I'm looking at is Kiper and others are predicting that the first round will set a record for the number of offensive players taken, so someone like Kool-Aid McKinstry might drop out of the first round. So we might do a small hop to the back-end of the first round or a couple spots higher in the second round if we see someone we really want.

Overall, I haven't heard rumors that we're zeroed in on any of the top players, so I don't think we'll make a big jump

Yeah Byron was just wishful thinking, but would love to see a late first round push for the Illinois DT, Kool-aid, or maybe even that corner out of Iowa? We've got enough picks from the late rounds and two seconds to make something happen. Wouldn't be a huge surprise to me if Nick made a push, just curious if he'd go secondary or DT.

Yeah, it will be interesting. I'm just hoping for a run on tackles and QBs in the teens for the first round pushing all of the defenders down and giving us an easier jump into the first if there's someone we like.

Also, Caserio really doesn't seem to value volume in regards to draft picks, so I would be surprised if we make small jumps, burning some of our later picks, to move up in the 2nd and 3rd round to get guys we want

I think there's a decent chance Nick moves up in the 1st just because I think they'll be a run on offensive players (QBs and WRs) and some really good defensive players and players of need for the Texans will be dropping as a result.

Agreed.

This draft is gonna be fun, as I think it's the first time in a while where I'm excited to watch the first round with us not having a draft pick going in.

I could easily see Trader Nick moving up too late first for a defensive player. Without a trade I am pretty sure we draft LB, DT and CB with our top 3 picks. If Edge cooper is there at 42 he is a real possibility I think. I could also see later picks for hybrid rb/wr Ainias Smith staying close to home as well as a t sip or two.

A trade up to 1st round could also be for a total surprise like a WR, Center or Safety. Never underestimate their sneakiness

I say stay where we are in the 2nd and grab Edge Cooper and Maason Smith out of lsu. He might end up being the best DT in the draft but taken lower than he should because of injuries.

Does tonight feel like overall the least build up to a NFL draft first round ever?

Nick Caserio has said before that he groups players he likes into clusters based on a range of where he thinks they may fall in the draft.

My theory is that he waits until there is one player left in that cluster, then makes a trade with the team currently picking no matter what to select that player. That way you are getting players you want on your team rather than waiting for players to fall to you. If a player or players from the cluster are still available when it's your turn to pick, even better.

Yes. There's no build up like other years before because number 1 is done and there's no true order for the other possible QB prospects in the first round. I also think it's because the league as a whole is not big on this QB class, but there are desperate teams that have no other option. Are the fan bases in any city salivating that the chance to take Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix, or Michael Penix? Last year there was speculation that Young, Stroud, Richardson, and even Levis were in contention for the first pick. Last year there was fun around the speculation, this year does not feel like that at all.

Regarding OP's trade up question:
A trade up wouldn't shock me, but trading back into the first round from the second will have an inherent premium built in because of the 5th year option for all first round draft picks. The teams in front of Houston in the second round are: Carolina (33 & 39), New England, Arizona, Washington (36 & 40), Chargers, Tennessee, and GB. Several of those teams have similar positions of need as Houston does, but I don't know how dire they are. I could be wrong but my gut says we don't move into the first but could move up in the second round depending on how the first plays out.

This first round is going to be heavy on offense, I've seen several predictions that they break the record for offensive players taken in the first round, which currently stands at 19. I think they could actually exceed even 20 given the needs of teams at QB, OL, and WR. I can't figure out if 4-6 QBs go in the first, do teams really like Nix and Penix enough to take them in the first round? I hope they do because that just pushes other guys back.

Man, PFF held on to those bad grades until around mid season. I had to stop listening to their podcast for a while, they just wouldn't admit they were wrong about our draft
