I went to an Arena Football game once where it was tied with 6 seconds left. The offense had the ball at midfield and missed the game-winning FG, but left 1 second on the clock, so the other team got the ball at the exact same spot, turned around and made the game-winning FG.

With NFL kickers approaching the 70 yard mark for FG attempts the fair catch free kick might become less rare moving forward.

I remember Tom Landry doing this in the mid-to-late '80s at halftime. I think the kicker missed a 60+ yard attempt though.

What exactly have they done to the K ball this season? I know it's different but not how.

im' confused, isn't having a further kick more advantageous for a fair catch free kick? If a team is punting from end zone, and they only get it to the 50 or so, that's when you'd use it? (assume time is low/no time outs, etc)

Instead of only getting 3 balls on gameday 60 minutes before kick and limited to working them then (and restricted on what they can use), they got 60 K balls at the start of the season and get to work them as much as they want. One can be used for up to 3 games.
